Medicinal uses for the Mullein Plant include pain relief, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, cough relief, skin astringent, soothing mucous membranes, helps expel mucus from airways, Diuretic (reduce fluid retention by increasing urine production), promotes healing of wounds and is well known in the alternative health community for its use in oil to treat earaches!
To read more about this very useful plant and its medicinal value you can begin here with Dr. Axe
In Permaculture Mullein helps to heal the soil. This plant has a long taproot which reaches deep into the ground loosening compact soil and pulling minerals up toward the surface. This is why you will often see it as a 'common weed' growing in disturbed soil and abandoned lots. When the plant eventually dies it places the minerals back into the top layer of the soil allowing other plants to begin to move back in. Nature is truly amazing!
The vegetation often referred to as weeds have a purpose in the natural cycle. If you have any experience cultivating wild medicinals, such as mullein, or using 'weeds' to heal your soil I'd love to hear about them in the comments!
