"I hear Qatar is lovely at certain times of year."
Cairo, August 6 - President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi's government announced today that his administration continues to pursue viable solutions to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, with the latest proposal involving hundreds of thousands of displaced Gazans moving to a location that is not Egypt.
Palace spokeswoman Wafa al-Nimby announced that the Arab republic of Egypt will absorb up to nine hundred thousand Palestinians from the war-torn Gaza Strip, as long as they can absorb those displaced Palestinians in some other country.
"We have not been blind to the humanitarian disaster unfolding in the Gaza Strip," stated al-Nimby. "The reports of starvation, of homelessness, of untold suffering, have not met with insensitive ears or hearts in Egypt. President al-Sisi has instructed his ministers to prepare a plan to take in hundreds of thousands of our suffering Palestinian brethren, somewhere such as Somalia, Indonesia, or some other place far, far away from Egypt."
The expression of solidarity from Egypt marks a significant shift in the country's official attitude toward the beleaguered Gaza residents, caught between Israel and Hamas since the latter invaded Israel in October 2023, sparking a war that has seen tens of thousands of Gaza homes destroyed because they housed Islamist military personnel, positions, materiel, or booby traps. Egypt has maintained even stricter limits on entry from neighboring Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip than even Israel has, despite the Jewish State's status as a belligerent in the conflict.
Al-Nimby acknowledged that the flood of starvation-related imagery and discourse put out by the Hamas leadership in the Gaza Strip and their allies in the region and the West played a significant role in the Sisi government's policy shift. "We cannot sit idly as Palestinians suffer, without taking steps to help them," she added. "Once, that help took the form of keeping them in harm's way, lest anyone be accused of ethnic cleansing. But now, the situation has evolved to the point that Egypt will accept nearly a million Palestinians from the Gaza Strip as long as none of those Palestinians come to Egypt."
"I hear Qatar is lovely at certain times of year," she observed. "But Tehran has drought and a host of other problems, so maybe that shouldn't be first choice."
The governments of the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Sweden, and Canada issued statements in response that they will welcome as many Palestinians on Egypt's behalf as necessary to ensure a swift Islamic takeover of those countries.
