Hello everyone,
Here we are in Italy, in the fantastic village of Torri del Benaco on Lake Garda. Every year, in May, the local associations organise the festival of San Filippo Neri, to honor the patron saint of the town.
I am following the members of the "El Peschet", a group of local fishermen, during their participation in the event.
The guys are demonstrating how to prepare the “Sarde en Soar”, a dialect term used to indicate a typical dish of Lake Garda, the "Sardines in flavour", which will then be served at the Festival.
From May to August, this freshwater fish moves towards the shore to lay eggs and many fishermen come to this event. The area in which the sardine lays its eggs goes from Torri del Benaco to Malcesine which is around 10km.
Within the festival you can find various stands and kiosks that serve Sardinian buffets, as well as a craft market that attracts many locals and tourists to our town.
During the day a boat is prepared with many colourful flowers which is then set on fire at night time, near the coast of the village of Torri del Benaco. Many tourists come to participate in the event. It is said, that during the period of the plague between 1400 and 1500, this ritual was performed to burn the remains of those who had died from it.
During the evening many floating lights are lit, creating an enchanting atmosphere for those who walk along the lakeside promenade. Live music is played through the evening until the festival ends at around midnight.
