Renowned as the most beautiful Danxia in China, the 400-square-kilometer Zhangye Danxia Landform is found mainly in Linze and Sunan counties in Zhangye City, Gansu Province, 40 kilometers away from the city proper.
Danxia is a unique geological landscape featuring an array of colorful mountains, curvaceous cliffs and strange rocks formed from reddish sandstone eroded by wind and water over a very long period of time.
The Danxia landform here was developed in about 200 million years ago before the Jurassic to Tertiary.
Zhangye Qilian Danxia is mainly constituted by red gravel, sandstone and mudstone, with the imprint of a clear arid, semi-arid climate.
China Danxia is a serial property comprising six component parts (Chishui, Taining, Langshan, Danxiashan, Longhushan, and Jianglangshan) found in the sub-tropical zone of south-eastern China within approximately 1700 km crescent shaped arc from Guizhou Province in the west to Zhejiang Province in the east.
It is a natural scenic spot perfect combining the sheer cliffs and steep mountains, strange, dangerous, beautiful of peaks pillars and the color of Xinjiang’s Colorful City.
As one of the most exemplary and exceptionally well-developed Danxia landforms in China, it provides a panoramic view of the amazingly colorful variations and magnificent rocks and hills rolling like waves.
The World Heritage Committee decided to include China Danxia Landform in the World Heritage List at its 34th meeting held in Brasilia, capital of Brazil, on August 1, 2010.
It's a world heritage site in fact covers a range of landscapes in Southern China, of which Mount Daxia in Guangdong is only the most famous.
The other five are: Mount Langshan and Mount Wanfoshan, Hunan Province; Taining and Guanzhoushan, Fujian Province; Mount Longhu and Guifeng, Jiangxi Province; Mount Chishui, Guizhou Province; and Fangyan and Mount Jianglang, Zhejiang Province.
