The Vrihat Sampat Yantra in Jantar Mantar is the largest stone sundial in the world. It is 90 feet tall, and is so large that its shadow moves at a speed of 1 millimeter per second. It can give the local time to an accuracy of 2 seconds and it is still functional. You can say that it is the largest instrument to measure time on the earth.
In old times, people used to estimate time by the position of moon, sun and planets. They didn’t had instruments to measure time. They have to completely rely on the stars for knowing the time and it becomes completely impossible for them to know time if there are clouds in the sky. There was no standards as every one used to have their own estimates of time.
Maharaja Jai Singh II urged the need to have some instruments which can accurately tell the time which will become the standard of time. So he build five Jantar Mantar instruments in India, of which the largest is in Jaipur. It is a collection of nineteen architectural astronomical instruments and it is located in the heart of the city.
I visited this place three years back. I was fortunate, the weather was not harsh on that day as it is generally too hot inJaipur especially in summers. Otherwise I wouldn’t be able to get this good photo and enjoyed the place much.
