”Standing Officer Trumpman! Git oan ‘att wheel and bring the bow about!”
”Aye Sairrr! !pimp” Trumpman yelled back as he gave the sip’s wheel two hard turns to bring the bow of the Silverton in line with the current.
“Galligan- git the water brigade oan the forecastle noo!”
”Aye Sairrr!”
As the men turned their fire fighting attention to the forecastle, it was clear that the bow of the ship was now seriously engulfed in flames!

[On the Silverton…main deck…]
The crew fought the forecastle fire with ferocity and it was no easy feat to get it under control. Charred railings and smoldering furlings of the jib sails littered the bow of the ship as the strong current of the river Niagara swiftly carried them far downstream from the Seneca village.
Exhausted and frustrated, the crew leaned against each other and some stooped down to the deck to catch their breath as the last of the fire went dark. Suddenly the Captain called out in a strong voice…
”Drap anchor!”
As the crew manned the capstan and began the laborious turning that brought the notable ‘splash’ of the heavy anchor back into the waters of the river, they all awaited the violent jolt as it dug deep into river mud and the bow of the ship was violently turned to portside as the stern was swept northward. The final jolt came as the ship lurched to starboard and finally straightened itself once again with its bow pointing upstream.
“!pimp” Standing Officer Trumpman could be heard muttering as the big ship’s wheel spun out of his hands uncontrollably and then finally came to a halt as the rudder found it’s equilibrium in the flow of the current.
“Something’s a wee fishy here!” Commander Kerrislravenhill said sarcastically as she wiped water off her face and struggled to get out from under a pile of fellow crewman.
“Nice to see that dude in the middle again!” Standing Officer Trayan joked as he helped Cabin Boy Team roll off of his legs and get his bearings back on two feet.
“Let’s see what I can do to move up to a better position…” Lieutenant Lupega said to himself as he carefully pushed Able Seaman Kamilla19 off of him and began to get to his feet.
The Captain never lost his footing in the violent correction of the vessel and quickly mounted the forecastle stairs to survey the damage…
“Two jibs burnt, portside rail damaged…loser foremast boom charred…” He surmised verbally as he glanced around, “Commander Galligan.....”
“Aye Sairrr?” Galligan said as he threw off a winding of rigging rope and dusted off his shirt with his hat.
“Git me a scuttle cannon well primed wi’ powder an’ grape below, an’ man-up a gin crew fur th’ first an’ mid watches! Ahh dorn’t wants tae be withoot ‘teeth’ if they try another attack tonight.”
“Aye Sairrr.”
As the brave but tired crew settled back into their roles, the return of order to the main deck began to take shape…
“We have serious problems…Able Seaman Tamaralovelace…” Lupega called out.
“Sairrr?”
“Get down to the sail room and bring up fresh jibs for the forward mast” He ordered as he glanced up at the smoldering furlings hanging along the bowsprit lead line.
“Spare sails it is Sairrr! Always a pleasure to serve!” She replied in as upbeat a tone as she could muster.
Across the deck, the red glow of the Captain’s pipe stood out in the approaching darkness. Despite the cheerful response of all crew, the Captain knew a growing sense of gloom was lingering in the hearts of all. ‘Would they get through the night in peace?’ He wondered as he took a long draw on his pipe and let out a large plume of blue smoke in the shape of an arrow that wafted in the breeze and slowly broke apart into nothingness under the glow of the early evening ship’s lanterns.
