Poker & Food
When you think about poker, you may not necessarily think about food. However, countless number of home poker games involve food. I remember the times of playing a weekly 1/2 NL Holdem cash game once a week, and everyone who came would always be interested in food. Sometimes we would order out, sometimes I would bring some homemade goodies for the group, and sometimes other players would bring munchies.
Even at casinos, poker rooms usually have their own exclusive menu. You've seen it, people place the order, then the waiter/waitress brings out a table, and the person is eating a club sandwich, or Chinese fried rice, while you are waiting for AA. You know you be looking at what they are eating...and who can blame you, poker is a game of hours, and in those hours, there isn't always time to eat.
Humans love to gamble. And humans love to eat. So why not combine the two?!
Would You Eat Your Hand?
As a Lucksacks AFT segment, we will be sharing with you some simple recipes that you can whip up before your poker game. Whether you're playing at home, online, or maybe even anal enough to take your food to the casino (D.N. does it all the time), these dishes will surely bring you some happiness, even if your poker session doesn't...
Today's Starting Hand
78 Seven-eight is known as RPM; apparently for the speed at which a record spins. It is by no means a good starting holdem hand. But it can certainly be played. Some may even call it a "stinger" - cause if that shit hits, it's gonna sting. So don't be afraid to play the hand, especially in an unraised situation. Just be ready to let it go if you must; and on the off chance that it hits, just be ready to rake in some monies.
Today's Dish
Cacio de pepe - Italian for "cheese and pepper" - a pasta dish from Rome that dates back to way the fuck back when. Both Pecorino Ramano cheese and black pepper was discovered, and used about 1200-2000 years before Christ. So needless to say, this dish is a tried and true classic. It is also extremely easy to make, and only requires a few ingredients. The result is a delicious, decadent Roman treat.
Annnnnd, if you know , you know I didn't just leave it in it's original form. I mean gotta Bigp it up a bit.
Wait, how is Cacio e pepe and 'RPM' the same thing? Let me tell you...
- RPM remind me of race cars. Race cars reminded me of Italy. Italy reminds me of Rome. And Rome reminds me of Cacio de pepe. So there you go.
Ingredients
- Spaghetti righatti (thick spaghetti)
- Romano cheese
- Black pepper
- Egg (poached)
- Prosciutto
Pics & Recipe
Prep prep, fuck I forgot the prosciutto in this pic.
While the pasta is boiling, add some cheese, and black pepper to a heat retaining bowl.
Add a little hot pasta water, and stir vigorously.
Stir until you see a sauce starting to form.
Use tongs to transfer boiled pasta to bowl. Reserve about 1 ladle full of the boiling pasta water. Add water 1-2 TB at a time, and mix to develop the creaminess
Bon appetite. Enjoy this rich and simple dish.
