When you think about poker, you may not necessarily think about food. However, countless number of home poker games involve food. I remember the times of playing a weekly 1/2 NL Holdem cash game once a week, and everyone who came would always be interested in food. Sometimes we would order out, sometimes I would bring some homemade goodies for the group, and sometimes other players would bring munchies.
Even at casinos, poker rooms usually have their own exclusive menu. You've seen it, people place the order, then the waiter/waitress brings out a table, and the person is eating a club sandwich, or Chinese fried rice, while you are waiting for AA. You know you be looking at what they are eating...and who can blame you, poker is a game of hours, and in those hours, there isn't always time to eat.
Humans love to gamble. And humans love to eat. So why not combine the two?!

Whether you're playing at home, online, or maybe even anal enough to take your food to the casino (D.N. does it all the time), these dishes will surely bring you some happiness, even if your poker session doesn't...
Today's Starting Hand
45 Or better known as the Colt 45 hand. The gun, not the beverage. But to me the Colt 45 reminds me of Houston - because Houston's baseball team was named the Colt 45s before Astros.
45 is not really a hand you should be playing in holdem. Really the only upside is a flopped straight. That being said, it is also the final hand Chris Moneymaker played during his WSOP championship run. And we all know he is a true bad ass at poker.
Today's Dish
Johnny Cakes - Ever had a Johnny Cakes? If not, shit son, you're missing out. Johnny Cakes are pancakes made with cornmeal as supposed to standard all purpose flour. Johnny Cakes may remind you of cornbread, but they are so much more. Johnny Cakes have a hint of sweetness, and crispy edges like pancakes. Served with honey and butter, you're in paradise. While you can have cornbread with honey and butter, you cannot have cornbread with eggs, sausage and grits. Oh you know what is about to happen don't you? It's breakfast time again...
Wait, how are Johnny Cakes and 'The Colt 45 Hand' the same thing?? Let me tell you...
- Remember when I said, Colt 45 reminded me of Houston? Well, Houston reminds me of Texas. And Texas reminds me of cowboys, and cowboys remind me of saddles, and you know what...Johnny Cakes used to be called Saddle Cakes (cowboys would carry around the batter in their saddles during long trips, and make cornmeal pancakes with the morning fire) - so there ya go
Recipe
- Box of Jiffy corn muffin mix
- Egg
- Milk
- Melted butter
- Oil
- Butter & Honey for topping
- Favorite style of eggs
- Favorite side - mine is buttery grit ("what is a grit?")
- Favorite meat
In a bowl add melted butter, box of Jiffy mix, 1 egg, and some milk. Mix until desired thickness. Can add more milk, or water if needed. Place a little oil in a pan, and proceed to make pancakes, err Johnny Cakes. Slather on loads of butter, and honey. Serve with all your favorite breakfast sides.
