Hello Crypto-world!
Some days ago I read a comment over Reddit about the surprising (at least for me) obesity problem in Thailand.
So, I read more about that and here I am sharing some concerns about.
Surprised by Obesity Rates in Thailand: A Growing Concern
I recently came across some shocking statistics about obesity in Thailand, an ASEAN country that I wouldn’t have expected to face such a significant public health issue. It turns out that obesity is on the rise, with Thailand ranking second in ASEAN for the highest number of obese people.
In 2022, a staggering 47.8% of the Thai population was classified as overweight or obese, a dramatic increase from 34.7% just six years prior. This trend spans various demographics:
- Adults: Over 40% of Thai adults aged 19 and older were found to be overweight or obese in earlier surveys.
- Gender Differences: Women are particularly affected, with obesity and overweight rates at 46.1%, compared to 35.5% for men. It’s alarming to see that 46.4% of females were obese in 2020 versus 37.8% of males.
- Children: The issue extends to younger populations, with 13.3% of children aged 6-14 and 9.07% of those under five being classified as obese. This is a serious concern, as childhood obesity can lead to long-term health issues.
What surprised me even more is the regional disparity; Bangkok has the highest obesity rates, with nearly half of its female population affected.
Several factors contribute to this worrying trend, including increased access to junk food, sugary drinks, and a shift towards more sedentary lifestyles due to urbanization and economic growth. In fact, the average Thai consumed 115.6 liters of sweetened drinks annually in 2015, a significant rise from previous years.
As someone who didn’t expect to see such high obesity levels in a Southeast Asian nation, these findings emphasize the need for urgent public health initiatives. Addressing this issue requires a multifaceted approach, focusing on education, promoting healthier diets, and encouraging physical activity, especially among children.
It’s a wake-up call that highlights the importance of awareness and action in tackling obesity, not just in Thailand, but across the region. My own country is in a big trouble with Obesity!
That's all for now!
