Hello Dearies. Today your GramNana wants to tell you about why we use the phrase, "Let the cat out of the bag."
GramNana's friend Olivia
See, in many parts of the world, people pick their own bananas. Right out there in their own yards, they have family banana trees and can go out and pick some whenever they want!
The easiest way for people to pick bananas is to keep their hands free, so they often wear a canvas bag slung over their shoulder to put the bananas in.
Once there was a banana harvester named Stan. He was really good at picking bananas ~ he picked them quickly, but was careful to always pick ripe ones and cut the stems cleanly. He was known as Stan the Man because he had so much talent at picking bananas. And because he had a bigger canvas bag than most people used.
What is that, Professor Dearie? Yes, here comes the story.
So Stan, the champion banana picker, had a sweet little cat named Dumpling who liked to scamper along with him while he was out in the sunshine picking bananas. One day, Stan decided he'd picked enough, but also noticed that his bag was quite heavy. He looked inside and... you'll never guess...
... his cat Dumpling was inside the bag!! hahahaha
What a surprise that was for Stan! I always roll on the floor laughing when I tell this part of the story. heeheeheehee!!
So, as I said, Stan looked inside his bag and his kitty was in there. He let it out and the bag was much lighter to carry, since it only had bananas in it now.
And that's how the phrase, "Let the cat out of the bag" got started.
That is NOT...
Let me stop you right there, Professor.
For the sake of your blood pressure and so as not to hurt GramNana's feelings, let's just accept her story as she wants to tell it. Alright?
That was a nice story, GramNana.
Thank you, Professor Dearie. I'm glad you liked it.
