FIREFLIES: Pupa
(book 2)Entry 18
Their days progressed easily - too easily. She was opening up more than she had since Bryd. It should have scared her - this reckless behavior with a relative stranger, but knowing that her time was almost finished in this world made her careless.
She started toying much more with the idea of manipulating things in this world, pulling some of her old tricks out of the bag that she used to use on Bryd. They weren't anything very noticeable; she didn't have storm clouds rain only on Caleb or anything obvious - just the occasional butterfly swarm, or a near-miss with a bird performing a "swoop and poop". Silly things to amuse her and test her skill. One thing was certain: this new discovery that she had ability in both worlds was becoming addicting and the power was going to her head.
As the days passed, she found that it was quite simple to manipulate here. So much easier than she thought it would be. True, the tension on molecules were a little bit tighter here than in her world. She wondered if things were so in this world because humans held it there - unknowingly, with their own expectations. Almost as if it was a group concensus that this was a rock, and should always be a rock - and so, it was.
In her world, there were very few humans. She had only ever seen two there, though she wasn't sure how many like her had crossed into that realm. Perhaps, the lack of humans allowed for a certain fluidity? Maybe everyone had varying degrees of this power, but it became suppressed over the years as limitations became accepted as the norm. Perhaps, she simply was born with an unusual openness to possibilities, and combined with the right environment and opportunity - it had created the perfect foundation?
Why had she ever thought that it was only limited to her other world?
Hadn't she manipulated food, drink, healing, and re-energizing in her own body all her life? She had, but she had also reasoned that the boundaries extended only to her flesh and bones. But why shouldn't she have been able to project it here? Weren't the two worlds exactly the same as far as physical makeup?
Looking back, it was obvious, but she could only assume that it was the power of suggestion that had limited her. Humans did not expect anything but what was natural and predictable. Their world was governed by laws, and so of course, her parents had reinforced their natural laws in that world while Talia grew. That world was for creating, and her world was for living the "normal" life.
Would Bryd have been able to wield it here also? She figured so, but as both Derek and Bryd had both pointed out -she had been allowed to explore that world openly as a child without any limitation, fear or interference. For years, she blossomed in solitude, her power growing exponentially in unchallenged innocence. Had that also been the key to her power? Since meeting Derek, she had grown much more powerful than Bryd, and clearly, much to his surprise - more powerful than Derek as well. She had so many questions, but none of that mattered now.
She was queen in both worlds, and now? She wasn't so sure she was ready for that to end.
