Hola querido hiver.
La última vez que había visitado este importante monumento de mi ciudad fue hace un año, cuando hice de guía turística para un par de hivers. Te lo conté todo en esta publicación. En esta ocasión regresé para ver una exposición sobre la obra del pintor Francisco de Goya, sobre la que también he escrito.
Sin embargo, no pude evitar volver a tomar fotografías de todo lo que pasaba ante mis ojos. No todos los días estás dentro de un lugar con tanta historia y por el que tantos personajes importantes han desfilado.
Esta vez no voy a hacerte un recorrido al uso por el lugar. Ya conté lo que sé sobre su historia en mi publicación de hace un año. Ahora prefiero sencillamente disfrutar de su arte y la arquitectura que lo contiene.
El Palacio de la Aljafería es como una Alhambra de Granada en miniatura, es algo que repito como un loro cuando hablo de ella. Encuentras arcos lobulados, decoraciones en yesería y ladrillo por todas partes. Como buen lugar de recreo que se precie sus constructores trataron de que cada uno de sus rincones estuviera impregnado de belleza.
Resulta asombroso que con casi un milenio a sus espaldas y habiendo pasado por usos dispares, incluido el de cuartel de tropas de asedio, sigamos viendo decoraciones originales tan bien conservadas. Curiosamente, fue justo ese uso militar el que preservó algunas de ellas. A veces lo que parece perjudicial ejerce el efecto contrario.
Pasear entre estos muros me trae recuerdos de juventud. El instituto en el que estudiaba está muy cerca y pasé muchas horas en el parque que circunda el castillo. Fue en esos años cuando hicieron la última restauración, pero como persona que lo ha conocido antes puedo atestiguar que es un trabajo excelente.
Algo que siempre señalo es la fantasía que supone mirar hacia los techos. Termino siempre con dolor de cuello, pero es que son una labor de artesanía increíble. En especial los de la época de los Reyes Católicos, con su famoso lema Tanto monta, monta tanto.
La única pega que encuentro al hecho de que este palacio albergue la exposición sobre Goya es que esta resta protagonismo a la magnificencia de los salones. El exterior, tal como se ve en esta publicación, está como siempre. Pero los paneles y expositores que contienen las obras pictóricas compiten por la atención del observador y ocultan en parte detalles valiosos.
En cambio, hay que reconocer que tiene la ventaja de que por el mismo precio uno disfruta de dos vertientes del arte diferentes y complementarias. Que uno de los monumentos más bonitos que tenemos contenga obras del pintor más afamado de la región es algo que hace la visita muy especial.
Los españoles tenemos fama de dar más valor a lo que nos llega desde fuera que a lo que poseemos. Ese no es mi caso. Me siento muy afortunada por vivir en un país con tanta historia que contar a través de su cultura. Contribuir a difundirla desde este pequeño rincón es un orgullo y me satisface mucho.
Eso no quita para que también aprecie lo que otras culturas poseen. El conocimiento y la historia son comunes a la humanidad, representan idénticas aspiraciones y temores. Contemplar maravillas como este palacio nos acerca a lo bueno que somos capaces de lograr.

Hi, dear hiver.
The last time I had visited this important monument of my city was a year ago, when I was a tour guide for a couple of hivers. I told you all about it in this post. This time I went back to see an exhibition on the work of the painter Francisco de Goya, about which I have also written.
However, I couldn't help but go back to taking pictures of everything that was happening before my eyes. It is not every day that you are inside a place with so much history and through which so many important people have passed.
This time I'm not going to give you a tour of the place. I already told you what I know about its history in my publication of a year ago. Now I prefer to simply enjoy its art and the architecture that contains it.
The Aljafería Palace is like a miniature Alhambra of Granada, something I repeat like a parrot when I talk about it. You find lobed arches, plasterwork and brick decorations everywhere. Like any self-respecting place of recreation, its builders tried to ensure that every corner was imbued with beauty.
It is astonishing that with almost a millennium behind it and having been put to a variety of uses, including as a barracks for siege troops, we still see such well-preserved original decorations. Curiously, it was precisely this military use that preserved some of them. Sometimes what appears to be detrimental has the opposite effect.
Strolling through these walls brings back memories of my youth. The high school where I studied is very close by and I spent many hours in the park surrounding the castle. It was in those years that the last restoration was done, but as someone who has known it before I can testify that it is an excellent job.
One thing I always point out is the fantasy of looking up at the ceilings. I always end up with a sore neck, but they are an incredible work of craftsmanship. Especially those from the time of the Catholic Monarchs, with their famous motto Tanto monta, monta tanto.
The only downside I find to the fact that this palace houses the Goya exhibition is that it detracts from the magnificence of the halls. The exterior, as seen in this publication, is as it has always been. But the panels and displays containing the paintings compete for the viewer's attention and partly obscure valuable details.
On the other hand, it has the advantage that for the same price one can enjoy two different and complementary aspects of art. The fact that one of the most beautiful monuments we have contains works by the most famous painter of the region is something that makes the visit very special.
We Spaniards have a reputation for giving more value to what comes to us from outside than to what we own. That is not my case. I feel very fortunate to live in a country with so much history to tell through its culture. To contribute to spreading it from this small corner is a source of pride and it gives me great satisfaction.
That does not detract from the fact that I also appreciate what other cultures possess. Knowledge and history are common to humanity, representing identical aspirations and fears. Contemplating wonders like this palace brings us closer to the good that we are capable of achieving.
