Unsere Reise führte uns von Bad Muskau nach Bautzen. Sie wird oft als "Stadt der Türme“ bezeichnet - eine Stadt voller Geschichte, Charme und natürlicher Schönheit. Bautzen ist auch bekannt für seinen Bautz'ner Senf, der in ganz Deutschland beliebt ist. Darüber hinaus ist Bautzen das kulturelle Zentrum der Sorben, einer westslawischen Minderheit, die in der Oberlausitz beheimatet ist. Doch bevor wir unser Ziel erreichten, gab es noch eine kleine Herausforderung: 30 km in die falsche Richtung! 😅 Dank unseres Navi und guter Laune, gestärkt durch die Begegnung mit einem netten Camper am Vorabend, kamen wir dennoch sicher an.
Our journey took us from Bad Muskau to Bautzen. It is often referred to as the “city of towers” - a city full of history, charm and natural beauty. Bautzen is also known for its Bautz'ner mustard, which is popular throughout Germany. In addition, Bautzen is the cultural center of the Sorbs, a West Slavic minority native to Upper Lusatia. But before we reached our destination, there was a small challenge: 30 km in the wrong direction! 😅 Thanks to our satnav and good mood, strengthened by the encounter with a nice camper the evening before, we still arrived safely.

Leider war der ausgewiesene Wohnmobilstellplatz direkt am Stadteingang überfüllt. Aber unsere Geduld wurde belohnt: Wir fanden einen alternativen Stellplatz inmitten der Natur, kostenlos, stadtnah und mit viel Platz. Kein heißer Teer unter den Füßen, sondern eine angenehme Grünfläche - perfekt zum Entspannen.
Unfortunately, the designated camper van site right at the entrance to the city was overcrowded. But our patience was rewarded: we found an alternative pitch in the middle of nature, free of charge, close to the city and with plenty of space. No hot tar underfoot, but a pleasant green area - perfect for relaxing.

Auf dem Stellplatz kamen wir mit einem niederländischen Paar ins Gespräch. Sie hatten die gleiche Information gelesen, dass es eine Abkürzung in die Stadt über einen Pfad und Treppen geben sollte. Wir suchten alle nach diesem Pfad und machten uns gemeinsam auf den Weg. Ich voraus, die anderen hinterher. Da war es wieder, mein Knie, das mich seit Tagen quälte. Wir verabschiedeten uns, da ich doch etwas lahmte, und wünschten uns eine gute Zeit.
We struck up a conversation with a Dutch couple on the pitch. They had read the same information, that there should be a shortcut into town via a path and stairs. We all looked for this path and set off together. I went ahead, the others followed. There it was again, my knee, which had been bothering me for days. We said goodbye, as I was a bit lame, and wished each other a good time.

Bautzen ist ein wahres Juwel! Die historische Altstadt beeindruckt mit malerischen Gassen, mittelalterlichen Gebäuden und einer imposanten Skyline aus Türmen und Kirchen. Besonders sehenswert sind die Ortenburg und der Dom St. Petri. Ein Highlight ist die Ruine der Nikolaikirche. Die im 15. Jahrhundert erbaute Kirche wurde im Dreißigjährigen Krieg zerstört und ist seitdem eine Ruine. Die verbliebenen Mauern erzählen von einer bewegten Vergangenheit. Umgeben von einem alten Friedhof, ist dieser Ort nicht nur historisch, sondern auch atmosphärisch ein ganz besonderer Ort in Bautzen.
Bautzen is a real gem! The historic old town impresses with picturesque alleyways, medieval buildings and an imposing skyline of towers and churches. The Ortenburg Castle and St. Peter's Cathedral are particularly worth seeing. One highlight is the ruins of the Nikolaikirche church. Built in the 15th century, the church was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War and has been in ruins ever since. The remaining walls tell of an eventful past. Surrounded by an old cemetery, this place is not only historically but also atmospherically a very special place in Bautzen.

Was Bautzen so besonders macht, ist die Verbindung von urbanem Charme und Natur. Während die Altstadt mit ihrer über 1000-jährigen Geschichte beeindruckt, laden die umliegenden grünen Oasen zum Verweilen ein. Ein Spaziergang entlang der Spree oder ein Blick von der Friedensbrücke zeigen die Stadt von ihrer schönsten Seite.
What makes Bautzen so special is the combination of urban charm and nature. While the old town impresses with its over 1000 years of history, the surrounding green oases invite you to linger. A walk along the Spree or a view from the Peace Bridge show the city from its most beautiful side.

Culinary finale
Am Ende des Tages kehrten wir in einem gemütlichen griechischen Restaurant in der Altstadt ein. Während wir unser Essen bestellten und die entspannte Atmosphäre genossen, betraten unsere niederländischen Bekannten unverhofft das Restaurant. Wir freuten uns, einander wiederzusehen, und während unseres lebhaften Gesprächs stellten wir fest, wie viele gemeinsame Interessen und Vorlieben wir hatten. Es war der perfekte Abschluss eines ereignisreichen Tages.
At the end of the day, we stopped off at a cozy Greek restaurant in the old town. While we were ordering our food and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere, our Dutch friends unexpectedly entered the restaurant. We were happy to see each other again and during our lively conversation we realized how many common interests and likes we had. It was the perfect end to an eventful day.

Der kostenlose, nicht ausgewiesene Wohnmobilstellplatz oberhalb der Altstadt bietet Platz für rund 50 Wohnmobile und kann außer bei Veranstaltungen ganzjährig genutzt werden. Der Platz wird im vorderen Bereich eines Großparkplatzes mit Autos und Reisebussen geteilt. Der Boden ist meist geschottert oder grasbewachsen und weitgehend eben. Es gibt keine Entsorgungsmöglichkeiten, kein Frischwasser und keinen Strom. Wenn Sie diese Infrastruktur benötigen, sollten Sie den ausgewiesenen Parkplatz am Ortseingang nutzen. Allerdings stehen dort nur sechs Stellplätze zur Verfügung, die bei unserer Ankunft und auch nach längerer Wartezeit voll belegt waren. Der Ausweichplatz war bei unserer Ankunft gut besucht, aber nach unserem Besuch in der Altstadt waren nur noch drei Fahrzeuge für die Nacht da. Der Stellplatz bietet einen wunderbaren Blick über die Dächer der Altstadt. Die Entfernung zum Zentrum beträgt etwa 1 km zu Fuß über normale Straßen. Alternativ kann man auch einen kleinen Pfad benutzen, der die Entfernung auf etwa 500 Meter verkürzt. Dieser Weg ist jedoch etwas beschwerlich, so dass gutes Schuhwerk empfohlen wird. Ausgeschilderte Rad- und Wanderwege laden zu Erkundungen in der Umgebung ein.
The free, undesignated motorhome parking area above the old town offers space for around 50 motorhomes and can be used all year round except during events. The site is shared with cars and coaches at the back area of a large parking lot. The ground is mostly gravel or grass and largely flat. There are no disposal facilities, no fresh water and no electricity. If you need this infrastructure, you should use the designated parking space at the entrance to the village. However, there are only six pitches available there, which were full when we arrived and even after a long wait. The alternative site was busy when we arrived, but after our visit to the old town there were only three vehicles left for the night. The pitch offers a wonderful view over the rooftops of the old town. The distance to the center is about 1 km on foot via normal roads. Alternatively, you can use a small path that shortens the distance to about 500 meters. However, this path is somewhat difficult, so good footwear is recommended. Signposted cycling and hiking trails invite you to explore the surrounding area.
