How long have I waited for a Breakfast contest? Over a year since Old Man and Son first opened their doors. Did I almost miss it? Yes....but here on the last day!
Strap on your feedbags and lets get to the review!
Old Man & Son https://oldmanandson.com/ boasts an all-day breakfast menu with plenty of lunch, and a little bit of evening. All presented by a well run staff any attention to detail not so subtly borrowed from the bistro across the street. The front is retro-trendy and the location is right in the middle of downtown just off the square. They know how to do it right.
A little history to whet your appetite Here is a little spotlight I did a few months ago https://steemit.com/food/@zekepickleman/entrepreneurial-spotlight-big-restaurateur-in-a-small-town I had the chance to implement the technology that runs the business and sample the menu as they were developing it.
The layout of the menu is great as they get SO much food on there and use the real estate so well. When you zoom in, you will see everything from Breakfast (of course) to lunch and all the side plates you would like to accompany your handmade meal.
The back of the menu completes the journey through the liquid portion from coffee to boozy, with a small side of daily specials. I really like the fact that there is a Milkshakes section AND a Boozy Shakes section on its own!
The table tops are noteworthy as either something comic book nerds will either love, or wonder whether it was worth anything before it became a table top. I remember Britt in the basement doing the arts and crafts so many months ago and it turned out great.
I had just finished training so I went simple with water and coffee. The coffee was great as Jessie knows the value of good coffee, and is friends with the owner of the cafe around the corner. I might have enjoyed having it forced upon me a little more but we were a table of 7 and probably a handful.
I am not sure whether to say some of my counterparts misbehaved or celebrated a little more than I did and went for the Mocha Lot-EH. I really wanted to stick my face in that but had to be satisfied watching them enjoy it so much.
Hungry yet?
Fine! I went for the standard Super Fluffy Pancakes. Real butter and real maple syrup indeed! By the look of the big stack, you might think this is my patented Super Dramatic close-up shot. You would be wrong.
THIS is my super dramatic close-up shot. The one that gets me strange looks every time I take it. The lengths I will go for my reviews and folks who read them. Now you HAVE to be hungry.
This will be the make or break of the review depending upon whether or not you are a vegetarian. Apologies to the latter but the former will enjoy this. Downstairs, left over from the previous restaurant (Cajun Smoke House!) is an industrial smoker. What better way to take pork grown and cured withing a few miles, and smoke and slice your own house-made bacon? Available for take home deli-style too!
The place has windows on 3 sides, plenty of room and personality to spare. The food is delicious and whole like your naughty grandmother would make. But, she would give all the credit to grampa for branding reasons. We managed to sneak in just before close (after training) and closed the place so we had the rarity of the place to ourselves.
The Goods
The receipt has become a popular part of my reviews as the accountants, numbers people, budget crunchers and people from across the globe relate to being given the bill. Not cheap by any stretch of the imagination but I would expect food that wasn't so great to cost this locally. I tipped nicely and will write this off as a business expense.
Who knows? Maybe my reviews will net me $35 when I am huge?
