Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose( blood sugar) , which leads over time to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves. I know of an elderly man(Mr Adams) in his late 60s whose leg was amputated as a result of diabetes.
Who would have thought Mr Adams who came from a wealthy family and could boast of huge amount of money would one day be so helpless and at the mercy of medical professionals in the battle to save his own life. Most people believe that money cannot buy life neither can it buy happiness and in his situation this saying seems to be true.
There he was laying helpless in the hospital ward hoping that the pain he was feeling will one day come to an end. Mr Adams a wealthy man completely carried away , forgetting that his health should always come first. He could afford to eat whatever he wants , so he ate and ate whatsoever he hungers for forgetting that whatever we take into our body can as well be poisonous to us. Over the years all the accumulation of the junk he has been eating was getting ready to hunt him.
One faithful day, Mr Adams noticed how dry his skin had become, how thirsty he gets lately, even when he had a cut when trying to cut open an orange, he noticed how long it took for the cut to heal.
Getting worried, he called his hospital and his doctor insisted he comes in for a test, this was done and the result when received fascinated him. He was DIABETIC! He has been living with diabetes for over 10 years. How strange, he thought, how can a wealthy man like himself be struck with this illness, right there at that very spot he had a moment of regret. He wished he had taken his health more serious, he wished he payed more attention, he wished he ate healthier meals, he wished he had not ignored the signs, he wished he drank a lot of water instead of all the champagnes and beer he has had over the years. Had I know , he yelled ontop of his voice alarming everyone else present in the hospital. The doctor, with pity, told him how severe his condition has become, how his kidneys as well has his heart has been affected.
Mr Adam now lying helpless in the hospital bed, could barely move, eat or even talk. The doctors did all they could to ensure this wealthy man survives it, unfortunately, Mr Adams lost the use of his leg due to wounds and ulcer in his leg that didn’t heal and for this reason, his leg had to be amputated. Amputated! Oh my, this is one thing even his wealth could not prevent .
Do NOT be a Mr. Adam, take your health seriously, eat healthier and help in this fight against diabetes.
In commemoration of the world diabetes day, 2021.
Those living with diabetes have an increase risk of lower limb amputation. Cuts, wound and ulcer that won’t heal are the most common cause of amputation among those with this condition. Other factors, such as high blood sugar levels and smoking, can increase the risk of foot-related complications, including amputation.
Remember, PREVENTION is better than CURE!
