On my previous blog, I've shared that I made my own apple cider vinegar that's why I have some apples left which I wanted to make some desserts.
Though many apple related desserts were pies and pastries, my curiousity starts to dig something new but didn't require any baking method. It is easy to do and can be compared to Turon.
It is basically wrapping saba (a kind of banana) and wrapped in spring roll wrapper. Deep frying with melted brown sugar to coat the turon. It gives a sweet and crispy texture that we'd love to eat for snacks.
But today, I'm gonna be trying to replace it with diced apples. Very easy and quick to cook. Here are the list of ingredients that I used for this recipe.
Ingredients:
2 medium size red apples
1/4 cup sugar
cornstarch for slurry
calamansi extract
dash of salt
some water
Here's how:
1.Wash and cut apples into dice. Drain and set aside.
2.In a pan, put the apples and sugar and allow to melt it with drops of water around 2-3 tbsp.
3.Add calamansi extract, lemon or vanilla extract. If you have cinnamon or nutmeg it is a good option too.
4.Once it simmer, add the slurry (dissolve cornstarch mixture with water), stir continously until it thickens.
4.Wait until it thickens and transfer it in a food container to cool down.
Arrange and cut into two parts spring roll wrappers. By doing this you will be making a mini size version and aside from that it will lessen the oil absorption if you do it that way. The more thicker it is the more oil it absorbs anyway.
5.Heat your frying pan and pour some vegetable oil. You can do deep fry but I don't like to do that so I will just scoop some oil around 1 tbsp. Enough to fry atleast 5-6 pieces for each batch.
6.Once it turn slightly golden brown, flip it on the other side until done. Repeat the process until finish. Serve while still hot to ensure the crispness of the spring roll wrapper.
Oh, I forgot to mention that I sprinkle some sugar after I fry it. It gives an extra sweetness to it as I do not add lots of sugar into the apple filling. I highly suggest that you eat this and serve with some tea or coffee.
This is a closer look. It seems like a tasted Turon but not a banana inside. I like the taste of the sweetness coming from the apples. I will definitely do this again but with another idea to create a new recipe instead.
Hope you could try this at home and see you in my next blog. Bye for now everyone!
