At the end of January, stargazers will get to view a supermoon, blue moon, and a total lunar eclipse (the blood moon) all in one night. While the supermoon is happening, the moon will look 14% bigger than the normal full moon and will be about 30% brighter than usual. This is because the moon will be closer to the horizon making the moon appear larger compared to the normal full moon we are used to seeing in the sky month after month. Although I am sure we have all seen one or all of these events occur with the moon but never all at once! All Three of these events will take place in one night at the end of the month January 31, 2018. If you want to take pictures or see it when it is at it's best I would recommend looking at the moon with trees or buildings around the horizon. That way it will give you a better perspective of the size of the moon.
I am sure we have all heard the saying "once in a blue moon" which means something that rarely happens. The blue moon happens every 2.5 years. It's called a blue moon whenever there are 2 full moons in a month usually one at the start like we just had and one at the end of the month. The next blue moon will occur on March 31st.
The blood moon or total lunar eclipse is what makes this the trifecta for all stargazers. The full moon will line up with the Earth and the sun casting a reddish hue which will turn the moon from white to red. If you live in a tall building or want to go hiking on a small hill that night, you will have the best views for taking pictures or for just viewing pleasure with the naked eye. That's if there are no clouds in the sky you will get to see the full moon brighter, larger and with a deep reddish hue.
My son and I are excited about this one and will view this from my friend's high rise building. We definitely won't miss this one. Will update with pictures early next month.
