Hello everyone,
Yay! The wait is over and Steemit Iron Chef is finally on!! I am so excited. When , the inventor of Steemit Iron Chef, proposed the idea, I was then thinking about Top Chef or Master Chef or any other cooking contest. I just fell in love with the idea but then I hesitated whether I'll be participating or not. In the end, I decided to join them and look how far I can go!
This week's theme is very interesting. It's tomato! Do you know that scientifically speaking, tomato is actually a fruit, not a veggie. It is a fun fact which I am sure not everyone know about this. For this contest, I would like to sublimate Heirloom Tomato and Cherry Tomato by making tart from these beautiful ingredients. I've just had this tart for dinner before writing this post. It's wonderful and the taste is simply amazing. At the beginning, my partner underestimated the dish but at the end, he just loooved it!
Ingredients
For The Crust
- 320 gr all purpose flour, more for rolling
- 227 gr cold unsalted butter
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 4-6 tbsp ice cold water
For The Tart
- 3 medium-big heirloom tomato, cut into 1 cm thick
- 8-10 cherry tomato, cut into half
- 250 gr grated cheese, I used: Cheddar, Affligem and Grimbergen. You may use also goat cheese or any other cheese that you like.
- 4-5 tbsp caramelized onion
- 1 tbsp herbs of Provence
- some fresh basil
For Caramelized Onion
- 3 red onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
Methods
For Crust
- In a food processor, place all purpose flour, salt and unsalted butter, pulse several times.
- Add in 4 tbsp cold water, pulse again. If you feel that's still too dry you may add 1 tbsp cold water at a time.
- Place in a floured surface, work the dough and flatten into a disk. Cover with a cling wrap.
- Chill in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
For Caramelized Onion
- Heat a frying pan over low heat, cook the red onion until it becomes soft. It will take about 10 minutes or more.
- Add in the brown sugar and balsamic vinegar, cook until caramelized.
- Set aside.
For The Assembling
- Preheat oven to 230°C
- Flatten the dough, roll out the dough and place it onto your tart pan. I used 28 cm round ceramic baking dish.
- Spread the caramelized onion evenly on the crust followed by the grated cheese on top of it.
- Arrange the tomatoes to cover the cheese.
- Sprinkle it with herbs of Provence.
- Bake for 20 minutes or until the crust turns golden brown.
- Add some fresh basil and serve.
You may add some egg wash if you want your crust to turn more golden brown. But I dont want to waste one egg for brushing the small amount of the crust. Look at the tart! It's gorgeous and colorful, isn't it? :-)
I do hope that my entry meets the expectation of our Executive Chef :-D and also everyone who reads my post. I hope you will give it a try and I am sure you will fall in love with dish.
