My Sketch: Castel Sant'Angelo, Rome.
This is the postcard view of the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome. The formal approach is by the bridge, the Pons Aelius. On the two sides of the bridge are 10 angel statues. Each holding something significant in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the crown of thorns, the nails, the lance, the cross and so on.
The original purpose was for the people to the meditation of the suffering of Christ, through a series of graphic depiction of the instrument of death. These are very moving artworks.
Nowadays, thousands upon thousands of visitors come here every day and gone in an hour's time, taking tonnes of photos with these beautiful statues and the Castel. Not too many cared to look closer and to learn what they are seeing.
If only we can slow our pace down......
