Hello all, this is my afternoon swim today. (Started at 6pm)
It was a warm day in the bay area, California today with tems just over 80*f, so the pool looked really inviting.
The swim was 3,300 yards with a moving time of 1 hour and 9 minutes. Swimming is a great sport to incorporate into your weekly exercise routine as it is really easy on the joints. There is no body weight impact on your ankles, knees, hips or back. Your not lifting free weights which places a lot of stress on the shoulders and elbows.
Below is some of the data that you see from the Garmin Connect site. A Garmin Vivoactive HR swim watch was used.
I was curious on how many calories that I burned so I looked it up on swimmingcalculator.com. Based on the total yards and moving time, it turned out to be 875 calories. That is pretty good as a man that is 5'10" and 160 lbs will typically need an average of 2500 calories per day.
So I saw an article from thesun which is a online newspaper from the UK which had a graph of the calories burned per hour for specific exercises. You can see that swimming burns almost as much as running and more than cycling. After swimming, most have a healthy appetite and I've seen some funny videos where swimmers are constantly hungry....lol
So check out that community pool and look for lap swim times. If you do not know how to swim, there are always lessons. You need to get really acclimated with the water to swim smoothly and consistently.
To get the distance that I am getting, I use small fins from Speedo and some hand paddles that I cut down so I can move them through the water faster. Let me know if you try out swimming!
