Mother’s Day means one thing; you need to take Mother out for something to eat. In my case it’s the entire family. Mother’s Day can get expensive, but not so at The New Waggoneers.
The ‘day’ in the UK is always on Sundays, but we always do the food on Saturday simply because everywhere is full on the following day. Makes sense doesn’t it?
We arrived around 12.15pm and the place was not exactly busy. They have a new extension at The New Waggoners and have extended the size of the car park to accommodate for all the new diners, but it never appears full when we have visited.
Today we were in the old part of the pub which when were arrived contained exactly zero other people. That suits me just fine.
After being ushered to a table that was in a corner we were handed the menus and proceeded to choose our food.
'These menus look very meaty, not good for veggies'
My mother is getting on a bit and tends not to eat much so I was surprised when she ordered the Homemade Lasagne at £12.35.
wanted the Cumberland Sausage at £10.50,
, the SeaBass Special at £14.55 and me the Plate Meat Pie at £10.85.
Having eaten at The New Waggoneers several times before I had an idea as of what to expect. The service was a little slow but considering they must make FOUR dishes I can understand this.
Around 20-25 minutes later all the dishes arrived. My mother was balking at the size of her Lasagne and the three pieces of garlic bread that accompanied it.
It was to the rescue who quickly nicked all the bread, quickly relocating it to her plate.
'This is a Plate Pie?'
My plate pie looked a little weird. I have come to expect this to be large and flat, but this was more rectangular and thicker. What kind of a plate did this originate from?
’s offering seemed a little sparse considering it was the most expensive, and
simply gave me a shrug when I asked her about the sausage (below).
I thought my pie was OK, but I really was looking for that flat type that I had pictured in my head. It was filled with these big chunks of meat which I am not a huge fan of.
I got mixed results from the others, my mother who surprised me by finishing the Lasagne was giving me the thumbs up while was feeling a little short changed.
By the time we were finished the restaurant was rather fuller and getting lively.
Maybe some others have the same idea as me about Mother’s Day?
This is the new section which we didn't get to eat in this time.
Weighing in at £56 including drinks for FOUR people, I can’t fault The New Waggoneers.... well except for 'That Pie'...
It is good value for money, though next time I won’t be choosing the plate pie, because it’s just not plate pie, and there's no changing my mind about this!
