When you think of Thailand, what's the first thing that comes to mind? Pad thai? Muay thai? Spicy curries? Elephants? If you guessed the last option (elephants), then you're ready to imagine today's stunning tale!
In Rayong Province (in eastern Thailand), a 45-year old woman, Miss Somjai, makes a living selling fried bananas. It's a common Thai snack and can be purchased from street vendors and roadside stalls in many parts of the country. Both sweet and crunchy, fried bananas are a great snack morning, noon, or night.
Many of the locals surely enjoyed the tasty treats coming from Miss Somjai's stall, but not everyone was patient enough to wait in line for the fried bananas.
As you can probably guess, some wild elephants heard about the tasty bananas and wanted to eat some too.
Last night, Miss Somjai had just purchased 200kg (about 440 pounds) of fresh bananas to be used for her stall. Yet, they never made it into the fryer.
During the night, neighbours report that about 10 elephants stormed into Miss Somjai's stall and scarfed down as many bananas as they could, leaving only a few bunches behind.
Had the bananas been fried, maybe they would have eaten them all!
