A little history
Ignacio Scarpa the patrician of Rijeka built his summer home here called „Villa Angiollina“ in 1844. This event marks the start of developement Opatija as a tourist destination.Today Villa Angiollina is a national museum of tourism. Back in the day Opatija was a summer retreat for the rich and famous people under Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. It was even called as the "Nice of Austria" at one point in time. Evidence to that are all the villas that where built alongside the „lungomare“ promenade during that period. Most of the villas are now converted to hotels.
Coffe break in Opatija
My favorie place to get coffe in Opatija is hote Continental. Continental doesent have a sea view it's situated on the main road inside the city. It's an old stile hotel. All sorts of goodies in here. In adition to good coffe they also have a smoothie bar, a cake shop, a deli shop and a real artisan chocolate factory inside the hotel. Interior design is nice and very original. Service is impeccable.
In the Deli shop you can find alot of regional delicacies but also from around the world.
Chocolatería
This is a real deal chocolate factory. All sorts of yummy chocolates in all kinds of shapes and forms are made infront of you behind the glass wall that separetes production and display part of the room. You can try most off them from the tray that stands on the big marble table in the picture below.
Conclusion
If you want to have a good coffe in a good ambient this is the place to go when you are in Opatija.
