After being on the road for about 10 hours, we were close to home when we noticed some strange clouds forming in the sky. We had already driven through several pockets of bad weather, as the remnants of the tropical storm were still hanging around, bringing on-and-off rain and winds. At first, we thought it was more of the same until we saw a funnel cloud starting to form right in front of us.
It was surreal. I would have expected an emergency alert on my phone to warn us, but ironically, we didn’t get one until we had already passed the worst of the storm. Seeing the tornado begin to form left us unsure of how to react. Some drivers decided to pull over on the side of the road, but we opted to keep moving, trying to get past the dangerous weather as quickly as possible.
Fortunately, the wind never picked up too much, but the downpour was intense. The rain was so heavy that visibility was almost zero at times. It was a tense few minutes for all of us, but we finally made it through to calmer skies. It was a relief to leave the funnel cloud and storm behind us, but the experience left us with a newfound respect for Mother Nature.
It’s not every day that you find yourself that close to a tornado, and for our family, it was a first. It was both terrifying and unforgettable, but thankfully, we made it through safely. The power of storms is truly awe-inspiring, and it’s a reminder of how quickly conditions can change when you're out on the road.
