Prefacio

El 27 de abril de 1925, millones de personas de todo el planeta observaron atónitas cómo un extraño destello verde en el cielo marcaba el nacimiento de un nuevo mundo. Un mundo sobre el que no existía ninguna vieja profecía y que desafiaba por completo todas las predicciones de la ciencia. Nuestros mayores sueños se estaban volviendo literalmente realidad.
¿Padecías una enfermedad incurable y tenías un sueño recurrente en el que sanabas? Pues el sueño se volvió real y la enfermedad desapareció.
¿Eras un granjero con una mala cosecha y soñabas con obtener una buena? Pues el sueño se volvió real y la mala cosecha se volvió buena.

¿La naturaleza te había hecho terriblemente feo y al acostarte a dormir soñabas con ser bonito? Pues el sueño se volvió real y la belleza ocupó el lugar de la fealdad que siempre que te había acomplejado.

Al principio, esta nueva era de sueños cumplidos asustó a la gente. No había ninguna explicación racional para lo que estaba pasando. Todas las antiguas teorías científicas y credos estaban siendo arrojados por la ventana. Las leyes de la física se habían roto, las creencias habían dejado de tener sentido y nadie sabía o sospechaba el porqué.

Y como siempre que hay una crisis pero se desconocen las razones de ella, muchos charlatanes aprovecharon el vacío de conocimiento de este nuevo mundo para fundar un nuevo credo. Un credo muy particular que tenía por eje a un dios verde, dispuesto a escucharnos, cuidarnos y amarnos como no lo había hecho nunca el viejo dios y todos sus profetas en los antiguos tiempos. Un nuevo dios cuya bondad infinita transformó a este mundo en el anhelado paraíso que siempre nos prometieron los viejos profetas, pero que el viejo dios nunca nos entregó.

—¿Por qué? —se preguntaron los escépticos.

—Porque nos lo merecíamos —solían responderle los profetas charlatanes.

—Sí, ¿pero realmente nos lo merecemos? —se preguntaron los hombres en busca de fe.

—Por supuesto. El nuevo dios disfruta con nuestra alegría —solían responderle los profetas charlatanes.

—¿Toda la humanidad? —se preguntaron los paranoicos.

—Sí, toda la humanidad —les dijeron estos.

Y mucha gente les creyó y siguió al culto del dios verde pensando que este dios que les daba todo lo que soñaban era realmente mejor que aquel que habían honrado sus antepasados. El dios verde no pedía nada, ni templos, ni dinero, ni una lealtad desmedida, solo daba y eso era algo nuevo que todos agradecían.

El gran problema es que los seres humanos también albergamos pesadillas en nuestro interior. Cosas que no nos atrevemos a confesarnos siquiera a nosotros mismos y que deseemos olvidar al despertar.

Y ese nuevo dios también las hizo realidad.

Preface

On April 27, 1925, millions of people across the planet watched in awe as a strange green flash in the sky marked the birth of a new world. A world for which no ancient prophecy existed, and one that utterly defied every prediction of science. Our greatest dreams were literally becoming reality.

Did you suffer from an incurable disease and have a recurring dream in which you were healed? The dream became real, and the illness vanished.

Were you a farmer with a poor harvest who dreamed of a bountiful one? The dream became real, and the failed harvest turned into a golden one.

Had nature made you terribly ugly, and as you lay down to sleep, did you dream of being beautiful? The dream became real, and beauty took the place of the ugliness that had always haunted you.

At first, this new era of fulfilled dreams terrified the people. There was no rational explanation for what was happening. All ancient scientific theories and creeds were being thrown out the window. The laws of physics had broken, beliefs had ceased to make sense, and no one knew or even suspected why.

And as always happens when there is a crisis but the reasons for it are unknown, many charlatans exploited the vacuum of knowledge in this new world to found a new creed. A very peculiar creed centered around a green god, ready to listen to us, care for us, and love us in a way the old god and all his prophets of ancient times never had. A new god whose infinite goodness transformed this world into the longed-for paradise the old prophets always promised but the old god never delivered.

"Why?" the skeptics asked.

"Because we deserved it," the charlatan prophets would answer them.

"Yes, but do we really deserve it?" the men in search of faith wondered.

"Of course. The new god delights in our joy," the charlatan prophets would answer them.

"All of humanity?" the paranoid wondered.

"Yes, all of humanity," they were told.

And many people believed them and followed the cult of the green god, thinking that this god who gave them everything they dreamed of was truly better than the one their ancestors had honored. The green god asked for nothing—no temples, no money, no excessive loyalty; he only gave, and that was something new that everyone was grateful for.

The great problem is that we human beings also harbor nightmares within us. Things we do not even dare confess to ourselves, and that we wish to forget upon waking.

And that new god made those real as well.
