Weather Takes the Lead
As we approached the island early that morning, it became clear that conditions were not in our favor. Heavy winds and high waves made it unsafe for our ship to dock. Despite the captain’s best attempts, it just wasn’t going to happen.
It was the first time I’ve ever experienced a cruise cancel a port stop due to weather, and it definitely caught us off guard. But safety comes first, and given how rough the water looked, it was the right call.
A Day at Sea—But Not Quite the One We Expected
The funny part is that the night before, we had actually discussed whether we might prefer to stay on board instead of heading ashore. After several busy days of excursions and exploring different islands, a restful day sounded appealing.
But once the cancellation became official, I expected the ship to pivot and offer some extra activities—something to make the unexpected sea day feel special.
Instead… nothing really changed.
Aside from the musicians we’d been seeing throughout the week, there weren’t any added events or programs. It made the day feel a bit underwhelming, almost like the ship wasn’t prepared for a change in plans—even though weather cancellations are always a possibility.
Not Disappointed, But Not Exactly Satisfied Either
I wasn’t heartbroken over missing the Bahamas, especially since we’ve visited many times before. But I was genuinely curious to see what Treasure Island had to offer. Having that little bit of novelty taken away—combined with a quiet ship—made the final day feel somewhat anticlimactic.
Still, it’s hard to complain too much. A day on a cruise is still better than a day in the office, and the extra time to relax wasn’t entirely unwelcome. We enjoyed the ship, the ocean views, and the downtime—even if it wasn’t the ending we expected.
Ending on a Grateful Note
If anything, the experience reminded me that travel always comes with uncertainties. You can plan every detail, but sometimes the weather or circumstances decide for you. And that’s okay.
Our Thanksgiving cruise gave us a week full of experiences, memories, and much-needed family time. Even with the cancelled stop, it was a wonderful trip—and one we may even turn into a tradition.
