A Walk Longer Than We Remembered
Our plan was simple: walk into downtown, stretch our legs, and enjoy the scenery on the way to the shops. We remembered it being a short walk—but memory isn’t always accurate.
After walking much longer than expected, I realized we were either lost, misremembering, or both. A quick stop to ask for directions confirmed something surprising: the shopping layout had changed dramatically.
A Shift in the Island’s Shopping Culture
I vividly remember St. Thomas as a bustling hub for duty-free shopping—stores packed with jewelry, watches, liquor, and visitors hunting for deals. The downtown area had an energy to it, a kind of organized chaos that felt quintessentially Caribbean.
But the locals told us things have shifted since the pandemic.
Cruise ships now dock at a port that features a brand-new shopping mall built right on the pier. With everything conveniently located steps from the ship, fewer visitors venture into downtown. Over time, this has pulled much of the economic activity away from the old streets and toward the port itself.
Walking through downtown, it was clear that the area was quieter than it used to be. The colonial-style architecture, stone walkways, and charming storefronts were still beautiful, but the crowds weren’t there anymore. It felt like a piece of the island’s identity had been overshadowed by convenience.
The Cable Cars: A Beautiful View at a Premium Price
One new addition since our last visit was the cable car system that takes visitors up the hillside for panoramic views of the bay. Locals told us the views are stunning—but also that the ride is very expensive and that there isn’t much to do once you reach the top.
We debated it briefly, but ultimately decided to pass. Instead, we stayed closer to the port, did a bit of shopping, and simply enjoyed the relaxed pace.
Choosing the Ship Over the Port
Although St. Thomas was our longest stop on the cruise, we didn’t feel the need to push ourselves. After exploring and doing a bit of shopping, we decided that rest actually sounded better than more activity.
Sometimes the best vacation moments aren’t the most action-packed—they’re the ones where you slow down, enjoy the ship, and savor the break from everyday life.
A Familiar Island, Changed but Still Charming
Despite the shifts in its shopping culture and tourist flow, St. Thomas still has a charm that’s undeniable. The history, the scenery, the sense of place—it’s all still there. But like many destinations, it has evolved in response to a world that changed very quickly.
It was nice to revisit after so long, even if our experience was quieter than in years past. And with plenty of cruise days still ahead, we didn’t mind saving our energy for the next adventure.
