I am really intrigued by vegan cheese! I had some in Bangkok which was not tasty cold but much better after warming up! It seemed to come alive with the heat and tasted surprisingly good.
Recently I saw this vegan cheese for sale at a supermarket in New Zealand. As this was supposed to be vegan cheddar I had to buy it and try some.
This vegan cheddar was produced by Angel food and was:
- 100% Vegan
- Gluten Free
- Dairy Free
That all sounds fine to me!
So what did it taste like. It was a firm at first but became a bit rubbery after being out of the fridge for a while. It didn't really taste like traditional cheddar cheese but was pleasant and like the vegan cheeses I tried in Bangkok became tastier if left out of the fridge for a while.
It seems that heat helps to activate the ingredients in vegan cheese so that they are tastier... at least to my pallet anyway!
It was getting cold in New Zealand so I tried to make myself some grilled (vegan) cheese sandwiches. Sadly this vegan cheese did not melt that well. It became even more rubber rather than bubbly and crispy. It was still tasty though.
Would I buy this vegan cheddar cheese again? Probably not but there are other vegan cheeses that I am eager to try as I come across them. I believe the company who produced this vegan cheese had another flavor. I would try that next time! 🐴
I want to add that I am in no way affiliated with the company which produced this vegan cheese. I purchased the cheese myself! 😉
