Dessert Wines - Are they ever good?
While visiting Adelaide for my 40th birthday, we visited a fantastic winery called Pike and Joyce. This winery had the most incredible view and produced some impressive wines as well.
Pike and Joyce specialise in:
cool climate, crisp delicate wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Gruner Veltliner, Rose and Pinot Noir together with our Sparkling wines, 'Methode Cuve' Pinot Noir Rose and 'Methode Traditionelle' Chardonnay Pinot Noir. Source
I tried most of what they had on offer, along with their dessert wine. Which is something that I rarely do. I generally avoid sweet wines as I've never really found one that I like. But this one surprised me at the time, it was quite pleasant and surprisingly complex for a style of wine that is normally just something to sip a little of at the end of a meal.
Pike and Joyce Sauvignon Blanc 2017 Doux Blanc
The dessert wine that I tried was Pike and Joyce's Sauvignon Blanc 2017. I don't often get surprised by wines, which might be a sign that I need to try new varieties a little more frequently. But in my defence, this wine was actually quite different in that they used Sauvignon Blanc grapes which isn't the usual variety of grape used in this type of wine.
This wine is a new release, so there aren't any reviews available or even any mention of the wine on the Pike and Joyce website.
The wine pours a very pale golden hue which is normally a sign of quite a young wine. So that could very well be the case here given that this wine was only bottled in 2017.
The aroma is full of sweet fruit including tropical fruits with the slight tartness of grapefruit. This aroma translated very well onto the palate where the grapefruit arrived late in the tasting and left a lingering tartness. I definitely enjoyed this wine, it's very well crafted. But you're very limited as to how you can drink it.
The wine would be best enjoyed with cheese or as an after dinner drink. And it's best served chilled. I drank this directly after removal from the fridge.
