My mother started to treat it with home remedies since it didn't seem so serious. However, the problem did not subside or stop. We began to notice that the disease (or whatever it was called) began to destroy the tissues in his ear. And we knew we couldn't handle it on our own. ##### ILLOGICAL BUT TRUE And here comes one of the most illogical things in this subject. My mother lives in a rural area, where people keep dogs, cats, parrots, chickens, rabbits, lambs, pigs, cows... in their homes. At some point the owners may need medical help for their animals. But, **there are no veterinarians in the village**. How did that come about? A few years ago, when we decided to sterilize our pets and to treat some episodes of illness, we were able to contact them and they came to our house. But after all these years, no one has that option locally. The nearest vet was a two-hour drive away. But we had to do something. Asking relatives, acquaintances and WhatsApp groups where there are also strangers, we started asking about veterinary care, and the closest answer was: *"Call so-and-so who knows about veterinary care. "* Wait! What do you mean *"he knows about veterinary care "*? As if because they are animals they don't deserve good medical care, and that they can put themselves in the hands of anyone. I'm not sure if that answer denotes esteem and value to the animals.

##### CARE WAS NOT ENOUGH The pandemic helped us to take advantage of, trust and seek remote medical assistance. For example, at home we have been evaluated for certain conditions by doctors who have helped us, both physical and mental health. So we knew it was a card to try to use. Of course, remote assistance doesn't work for all conditions, but we had to try. So we got some veterinarians who agreed to let us send them some photos and descriptions of what we were seeing in Luna. Some prescribed doses of medication, both oral and applied to the affected area. They did not effectively stop the disease, and it continued to progress. Although we tried to follow up with the same doctors, it was not possible. Taking a pet whose degenerative disease was visible to the naked eye was not easy. Some drivers we consulted with would not accept to take her in that condition. Public transportation was also not an option. The shortage of fuel meant that the cost of the service increased dramatically. Fees, transportation, stay, post-operative treatment, and who knows what else added up to a considerable amount. The other option was for the veterinarian to relocate. This way we could pay only his fees, although with a surcharge for the transfer. Fortunately one of them agreed. But, unfortunately, the doctor did not come. The day he promised to do so, he told me he had an emergency caesarean section with a dog. Then he had a breakdown on the roof of his house that he decided to prioritize. That was the last I heard, since the messages I wrote him every week he didn't even answer them. ##### THREE MONTHS LATER Yesterday, at 5:30 a.m. the vet wrote me that he would be traveling to examine Luna. I am away from home. So I contacted my mom and told her to get everything ready. Thanks to the help we received from valuable friends who also love cats we were able to complete the money we were short. It was intact three months later, because we were hopeful that help for Luna would come someday.

Unfortunately, the doctor determined that the disease had progressed too far, and that her hearing was compromised and there was no assurance that she would recover favorably. He also told of a similar case in his town, and that the owners had decided to keep trying to slow down her disease. But it continued to advance cruelly until it almost reached his eye. Therefore, his recommendation was to "put her to sleep". And so it was. He took care of everything. My mother did not see the process. The Doctor himself was in charge of wrapping her in one of his blankets and opening the hole for her inert little body. ##### THE REST My mother had an engagement in the afternoon. She did not keep it in view of the fact that she was feeling very sad. Although she prepared lunch to give to the doctor and his assistant and was active while they were at home, once they left she was able to release the sadness by crying. So she decided not to leave the house. I have also had some very sad times yesterday and today. I think the thing that affects me the most is not having said goodbye to her. She was not our cat, but we have seen her all these years, from a few days after her birth until this month, 14 years at least. We fed her, we played with her, we saw her, we got attached to her. Yes, before traveling I remember holding her chubby body in my arms, and seeing her noble gaze, perhaps thanking me for still showing her affection despite her notorious illness. Writing is part of what I seek to release all this. Luna preserved her way of being until the very last. I have several pictures of her on my phone, when she was still healthy, and many when she was sick, which were used to show the doctors, but which also showed her simple coexistence. For this post I decided not to show those last pictures. Why? Mainly for her dignity, I don't want to give publicity to what was not pleasant.

And one of the things he loved most was sleeping. Maybe that's how she is in most of the pictures I have. And that's how I want to remember her, calm, healthy and content. Even though I know I will never see her again, I am comforted that she is no longer suffering. I thank God for having created animals for man's enjoyment. How wise and loving He is! Descarten que ella se mudó, descarten que nosotros nos mudamos. Mi madre empezó a tratarlo con remedios domésticos ya que no parecía tan grave. Sin embargo, el problema no cedía ni se detenía. Empezamos a notar que la enfermedad (o como sea que se llame) empezó a destruir los tejidos de su oreja. Y supimos que no podríamos manejarlo por nuestra cuenta. ##### ILÓGICO PERO CIERTO Y aqui viene una de las cosas más ilógicas en este tema. Mi madre vive en una zona rural, donde las personas tienen en sus casas perros, gatos, loros, crían gallinas, conejos, corderos, cochinos, vacas... En algún momento los dueños pueden necesitar ayuda médica para sus animalitos. Pero, **en el pueblo no hay veterinarios.** ¿Cómo llegó a suceder eso? Hace unos años atrás, cuando decidimos esterilizar a nuestras mascotas y atenderle tambien algunos episodios de enfermedad, sí logramos contactarlos y vinieron a casa. Pero luego de estos años ya nadie tiene esa opción en la localidad. El veterinario más cercano estaba a dos horas de viaje. Pero algo teníamos que hacer. Al preguntar a familiares, conocidos y grupos de WhatsApp donde también hay desconocidos, empezamos a preguntar sobre atención veterinaria, y la respuesta más cercana fue: *"Llame a fulano que él sabe de veterinaria".* ¡Espera! ¿A qué te refieres con *"él sabe de veterinaria"*? Como si por ser animales no merecen una buena atención médica, y de que pueden ponerse en manos de cualquiera. No estoy seguro si esa respuesta denota estima y valor a los animales.

##### LA ATENCIÓN NO FUE SUFICIENTE La pandemia nos ayudó a aprovechar, confiar y buscar la asistencia médica remota. Por ejemplo, en casa hemos sido evaluados en ciertas afecciones por médicos que nos han ayudado, tanto de salud física como mental. Así que sabíamos que era una carta que había que intentar usar. Por supuesto, la asistencia remota no sirve para todas las afecciones, pero había que intentarlo. Así que conseguimos algunos veterinarios que accedieron a que les enviáramos algunas fotos y descripciones de lo que veíamos en Luna. Algunos recetaron dosis de medicamentos, tanto orales como aplicados en la zona afectada. No detuvieron efectivamente la enfermedad, y esta siguió avanzando. Aunque intentamos dar seguimiento al caso con los mismos médicos, no fue posible. Buscamos un par nuevos, y ambos coincidieron en que la solución sería una intervención quirúrgica. ![IMG_20230831_092049.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/aaalviarez/23yd8DoC3NSHZdFhKv4xVLRz6PPDyhpJXB97nyBc6YiDQb1tvN8QD25LAJJAgP26YvqkU.jpg) ##### DOS OPCIONES DIFÍCILES Para hacer la cirugía debíamos llevar a Luna a la ciudad, y quedarnos hasta su recuperación. $120 eran los honorarios del veterinario. Llevar una mascota que a simple vista podía verse su enfermedad degenerativa no era nada sencillo. Algunos choferes con los que consultamos no aceptaban llevarla en ese estado. El transporte publico tampoco era una opción. La escases en el abastecimiento de combustible hacía de que los costos del servicio aumentaran estrepitosamente. Los honorarios, el transporte, la estadía, el tratamiento post operatorio, y quien sabe qué más llegó a totalizar un monto considerable. La otra opción es que el veterinario se trasladara. Así lográbamos pagar sólo sus honorarios, aunque con un recargo por el traslado. Afortunadamente uno de ellos accedió. Pero, por desgracia, el doctor no venía. El día que prometió hacerlo me dijo que tenía una cesárea de emergencia con una perra. Luego, tuvo una avería en el techo de su casa que decidió darle prioridad. Eso fue lo último que supe, ya que los mensajes que le escribía cada semana ni siquiera me los respondió. ##### TRES MESES DESPUÉS Ayer, a las 5:30 a.m. el veterinario me escribió de que viajaría a examinar a Luna. Estoy fuera de casa. Así que contacté a mi madre y le dije que preparara todo. Gracias a la ayuda que recibimos de valiosos amigos que también aman a los gatos pudimos completar el dinero que nos faltaba. Estaba intacto tres meses después, porque teníamos la esperanza de que la ayuda a Luna llegaría algún día.

Por desgracia, el doctor determinó de que la enfermedad había avanzado mucho, y de que el oído estaba comprometido y no habría seguridad de que pudiera recuperarse favorablemente. También, contó de un caso similar en su ciudad, y que los dueños habían decidio seguir tratando de frenarle su enfermedad. Pero seguía avanzando cruelmente hasta ya casi llegarle al ojo. Por eso, su recomendación era "ponerla a dormir". Y así fue. Él se encargó de todo. Mi madre no vio el proceso. El Doctor mismo se encargó de envolverla en una de sus cobijas y de abrir el hoyo para su inerte cuerpito. ##### EL DESCANSO Mi madre tenía un compromiso en la tarde. No lo cumplió en vista de que se sentía muy triste. A pesar de que preparó almuerzo para brindarle al doctor y su ayudante y estuvo activa mientras ellos estuvieron en casa, una vez que se fueron pudo liberar la tristeza mediante el llanto. Así que decidió no salir de casa. También he pasado algunos ratos muy tristes ayer y hoy. Creo que lo que más me afecta es no haberla despedido. No era nuestra gata, pero la hemos visto todos estos años, desde pocos dias desde su nacimiento hasta este mes, 14 años por lo menos. La alimentamos, jugamos, la vimos, nos encariñamos. Sí, antes de viajar recuerdo haber tenido en mis brazos su gordito cuerpo, y verle su noble mirada, quizás agradeciendome que aún le muestre cariño a pesar de su notoria enfermedad. Escribir es parte de lo que busco para soltar todo esto. Luna conservó su forma de ser hasta lo último. Tengo varias fotos de ella en mi teléfono, cuando aún estaba sana, y muchas ya enferma, que sirvieron para mostrarlas a los médicos, pero que tambien mostraban su sencilla convivencia. Para éste post decidí no mostrar esas últimas imágenes. ¿Para qué? Principalmente, por su dignidad, no quiero darle publicidad a lo que no resultó agradable.

Y una de las cosas que más le gustaba era dormir. Tal vez así está en la mayoría de las fotos que tengo. Y así la quiero recordar, tranquila, sana y satisfecha. Aunque sé que no la volveré a ver, me consuela que ya no esté sufriendo. Le agradezco a Dios por haber creado a los animales para el disfrute del hombre. ¡Qué sabio y amoroso es Él! Y así seguirá siendo. Por favor, sigan disfrutando de sus mascotas, y aprovechando el tiempo. ¿Haz visto una noche sin luna? La nuestra, ya no esta.
