Hello everyone, I hope you are all feeling super cool, this time I want to share a new review, I will talk about an anime that I thought would be different, and I ended up having mixed feelings about.. today I will give you my opinion of: Mysterious Disappearances.. The point is, imagine: modern Japan, but underneath there are super strange things happening.. like, people disappearing just like that, and everything connected to Japanese myths, very old, urban legends and even other waves of oriental folklore, that premise, right from the start, caught me immediately, you know? I am a fan of supernatural mysteries that are based on real mythology.. it gives it all that kind of creepy vibe of "what if it were true?" which I love, well, the story follows this couple who works in a bookstore... first there's Sumireko Ogawa, she's a novelist who's suffering from a terrible writer's block, but physically... okay, let's talk about this already because it was a constant distraction and, honestly, quite annoying... the level of "fan service" with her is taken to the extreme, maybe even beyond! I'm talking about ridiculously exaggerated proportions that felt... gratuitous? Look, I understand that anime does these things, but here it often felt so unnecessary and, honestly, a little absurd... there were times when I was really shocked by how exaggerated and almost alien her body looked, she looked like a caricature made just for morbidity, and it often took me completely out of the story. I kept thinking, "Does anyone really look like that? And more importantly, why does she have to look like that?" It's a super noticeable part of her design, and I have to warn you all: if that kind of thing bothers you a lot, it might be a big "but," for me, it really was at times, and I felt like it took away from the seriousness of her character, and that's a shame because the idea of a writer investigating the occult should be great. >Hola a todos, espero que estén super genial, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, les hablaré de un anime que pensé que sería diferente, y termine teniendo sentimientos encontrados.. hoy les daré mi opinión de: Mysterious Disappearances.. El punto es que imagínense: Japón moderno, pero por debajo están pasando cosas súper extrañas.. como que, gente que desaparece así nomás, y todo conectado con mitos japoneses, viejísimos, leyendas urbanas y hasta otras ondas del folclore oriental, esa premisa, así de entrada, me atrapó al toque, ¿saben? Soy fan de los misterios sobrenaturales que se basan en mitología real.. le da toda esa vibra medio creepy de "¿y si fuera cierto?" que a mí me fascina, bueno, la historia sigue a esta pareja que trabaja en una librería.. primero está Sumireko Ogawa, es una novelista que anda con un bloqueo creativo terrible, pero físicamente... ok, hablemos de esto de una vez porque fue una distracción constante y, sinceramente, bastante molesto.. el nivel de "fan service" con ella está llevado al extremo, ¡quizás más allá!
Hablo de proporciones ridículamente exageradas que se sentían... ¿gratuitas? Miren, yo entiendo que el anime hace estas cosas, pero aquí muchas veces se sentía tan innecesario y, la verdad, un poco absurdo.. hubo momentos en que de verdad me chocaba lo exagerado y casi alienígena que se veía su cuerpo, parecía una caricatura hecha nomás para el morbo, y seguido me sacaba por completo de la historia. And the dynamic between them? It's... weird, but it's definitely one of the coolest things, Sumireko is like the daring one (maybe too much, because of how she was drawn, you know), kind of gossipy, and she's drawn to strange events, partly out of a writer's curiosity and partly because, well, strange things keep happening to her, Ren is like the calm guide, the one who knows, the one who often gets them out of trouble or gives them just that key piece of information they need to understand what monster or old thing they encountered that week. Seeing how their relationship grows, how little by little they gain trust, and how they manage to get out of these dangerous situations together, honestly, really hooks you in. It's not just your classic coworker relationship; there's a kind of strange tension, a push and pull that keeps you interested in both them and the mysteries. And speaking of mysteries, the way the series is written is pretty good at keeping you glued. It's not one long, long story that lasts the entire season and can get dense. Rather, it's divided into smaller mysteries, which almost always resolve themselves, and that last about a couple of chapters. Each one deals with a different disappearance, a specific curse, or some apparition connected to some obscure legend. One week it's a ghost from a fairy tale, and the next, it's a curse that started with an object that looked like anything. This episodic approach works really well because it gives you a quick closure, but there are also little things that connect everything together... you constantly have new little mysteries to solve alongside the characters. >Bueno, dejando eso de lado.. su compañero de trabajo es Ren Adashino, él es todo lo contrario: callado, medio nerd, pero con una vibra de misterio bien intensa, al toque te das cuenta de que sabe mucho más de lo que parece, sobre todo de todas esas cosas creepy que andan pasando.. sabe un montón de ocultismo, maldiciones, folclore... de todo, ¡lo que le preguntes! ¿Y la dinámica entre ellos dos? Es... rara, pero sin duda es una de las cosas más chidas, Sumireko es como la aventada (quizás demasiado, por cómo la dibujaron, ya saben), medio chismosa, y le llaman la atención los eventos raros, en parte por curiosidad de escritora y en parte porque, pues, no dejan de pasarle cosas extrañas, Ren es como el guía tranquilo, el que sabe, el que seguido los saca de problemas o les da justo ese dato clave que necesitan para entender con qué monstruo o cosa vieja se encontraron esa semana. Ver cómo va creciendo su relación, cómo de a poquito se agarran confianza y cómo le hacen para salir juntos de estas situaciones peligrosas, la verdad, te engancha un montón.. no es la clásica relación de compañeros de trabajo nomás; hay como una tensión rara, un estira y afloja que te mantiene pendiente tanto de ellos como de los misterios, y hablando de los misterios, la forma en que está hecha la serie está bastante buena para mantenerte pegado.
No es una sola historia larguísima que dura toda la temporada y que se puede poner densa.. más bien, la dividen en misterios más chiquitos, que casi siempre se resuelven solos, y que duran como un par de capítulos, cada uno de estos trata una desaparición diferente, una maldición específica o alguna aparición conectada con alguna leyenda medio oscura.. una semana es un fantasma de un cuento de abuela, y la siguiente capaz es una maldición que empezó por un objeto que parecía cualquier cosa. It creates this great atmosphere of intrigue, where the normal world feels fragile, as if at any moment you could stumble and fall into something ancient and terrifying. It perfectly nails that feeling of Japanese horror where the most ordinary thing suddenly becomes a threat... imagine looking at dusty shelves one minute, and the next, you're dealing with a vengeful spirit stuck to a photo... that mix of the everyday, the semi-boring—like working in a bookstore, dealing with not being able to write—with these sudden eruptions of the Supernatural, with a capital S, is probably what I liked most about the series. It makes the scary stuff feel closer and even believable in a way. Now, while the mysteries are good, I do have one complaint there... sometimes, especially Ren, he gets a little too clever with his explanations… I mean, the show sometimes falls into the trap of having him go on long speeches about the specific myth or curse in question. And while the details are fascinating (seriously, I learned a couple of interesting things about folklore), there were times when I felt like it slowed down the pace too much... instead of letting the tension build or letting us piece together the puzzle with visual clues or more subtle dialogue, they gave us a mini-lecture. Not that it ruined the experience, but sometimes I wish they'd trusted us as the audience a little more and let the mystery breathe, you know? Show, not just tell... sometimes it seemed to take away the excitement just when it needed to be at its peak... To add more flavor to the broth, there's Ren's younger sister, Oto Adashino. She doesn't appear all the time, but she's important. She has this special ability: she can see supernatural "warning signs," like dark figures or strange things that tell her when something cursed or dangerous is nearby... She's this quiet, half-disturbing girl, who seems overwhelmed by this gift she has. Her presence, along with Ren's protectiveness of her, adds more depth to the mystery surrounding the Adashino siblings. >Y bueno, el rollo sobrenatural y de terror sí está presente, hablamos de maldiciones de verdad que tienen efectos que se sienten y muchas veces dan miedo, visiones de fantasmas y encuentros con cosas que, definitivamente, no te dejan dormir tranquilo.. se inclina más hacia el suspenso del ambiente, al terror psicológico, que a andar mostrando sangre y tripas por todos lados, cosa que yo agradecí bastante. Te crea esta atmósfera genial de intriga, donde el mundo normalito se siente como frágil, como si en cualquier momento pudieras tropezar y caer en algo antiguo y terrorífico, clava perfecto esa sensación del terror japonés donde lo más común de repente se vuelve una amenaza.. imagínense estar viendo estantes con polvo un minuto, y al siguiente, ya estás lidiando con un espíritu vengativo pegado a una foto.. esa mezcla de lo cotidiano, lo medio aburrido –como trabajar en una librería, lidiar con no poder escribir– con estas irrupciones repentinas de lo Sobrenatural así, con mayúsculas, es probablemente lo que más me gustó de la serie.
Hace que las cosas que dan miedo se sientan más cercanas y hasta creíbles, de alguna forma, ahora, aunque los misterios están buenos, tengo una queja por ahí.. a veces, especialmente Ren, se pasa un poquito de listo explicando las cosas.. o sea, la serie a veces cae en la trampa de hacer que él se aviente unos discursos larguísimos sobre el mito o la maldición específica de turno. Y aunque los detalles son fascinantes (en serio, aprendí un par de cosas interesantes de folclore), hubo momentos en que sentí que le bajaba demasiado al ritmo.. en lugar de dejar que la tensión creciera o dejarnos armar el rompecabezas con pistas visuales o diálogos más disimulados, nos daban una mini-clase, no es que arruinara la experiencia, pero a veces me hubiera gustado que confiaran un poquito más en nosotros como público y dejaran que el misterio respirara, ¿saben?
Mostrar, no solo contarlo todo.. veces como que le quitaba la emoción justo cuando tenía que estar al máximo.. para ponerle más sabor al caldo, está la hermana menor de Ren, Oto Adashino, no sale todo el tiempo, pero es importante. Look, the truth is, I started watching it thinking it was going to be your typical supernatural mystery, maybe a run-of-the-mill one, but I was pleasantly surprised by how they managed to mix the cases in each episode with the development of the protagonists' relationship and the backstory of the Adashino brothers. The atmosphere was often well done, it got you into the groove, and the use of not-so-well-known Japanese and Eastern myths was a real plus, to be honest... what really brought me down a bit, or rather, what really bothered me the whole time, was the over-the-top fan service with Sumireko. It felt cheesy and often took away from the character, who was otherwise interesting, and also from the serious tone the series was trying to maintain. And the fact that sometimes everything was explained in great detail was also another stumbling block... but despite those complaints, especially the one about Sumireko's design, which I did find in poor taste at times, the truth is that I did get hooked on the world and the main relationship. The mysteries were quite interesting, the creepy vibe was certainly there, and the doubts about Ren and Oto had me there, clicking the "next episode" button. If I had to give it a rating, I think I'd give it a **7/10**. Why a 7? Well look, the main idea is good, the dynamic between Sumireko and Ren is interesting (when it’s not overshadowed by that questionable character design), the mysteries in each chapter are generally well done, and how they introduce folklore is great… the atmosphere can get really creepy, and the Adashino backstory adds depth, but it does lower points, quite a few in my opinion, because of the constant fan service that sometimes didn’t seem to fit with Sumireko at all – it felt like a huge mistake that took away from parts of the experience… it’s a good series, even very good at times, but those little flaws keep it from being totally great, really… and well, that’s all for today, see you in the next reviews, take care! Miren, la verdad, yo empecé a verla pensando que iba a ser el típico misterio sobrenatural, quizás medio del montón, pero me sorprendió para bien cómo lograron mezclar los casos de cada capítulo con el desarrollo de la relación de los protas y esa historia de fondo de los hermanos Adashino, el ambiente muchas veces sí estaba bien logrado, te metía en la onda, y que usaran mitos japoneses y orientales no tan conocidos fue un puntazo, la verdad.. lo que sí me bajó un poco, o más bien, me molestó bastante todo el tiempo, fue el fan service súper exagerado con Sumireko, se sintió chafa, y muchas veces le quitaba peso al personaje, que por lo demás era interesante, y también al tono serio que la serie quería tener. Y eso de que a veces te explicaban todo con lujo de detalle también fue otro tropezón.. pero a pesar de esas quejas, sobre todo lo del diseño de Sumireko que a ratos sí me pareció de mal gusto, la verdad es que sí me enganché con el mundo y con la relación principal, los misterios estaban bastante interesantes, la vibra creepy sí se sentía, y las dudas sobre Ren y Oto me tenían ahí picado, dándole al botón de "siguiente episodio". Si le tuviera que poner una calificación, yo creo que le daría como un **7/10**.
Por qué un 7? Pues miren, la idea principal está buena, la dinámica entre Sumireko y Ren es interesante (cuando no la opaca ese diseño de personaje tan cuestionable), los misterios de cada capítulo generalmente están bien hechos, y cómo meten el folclore está genial.. el ambiente puede ponerse bien creepy de verdad, y la historia de fondo de los Adashino le suma profundidad, pero sí le baja puntos, bastantes para mí, por ese fan service constante y que a veces como que no pegaba nada con Sumireko – se sintió como un error grande que le quitó valor a partes de la experiencia.. es una buena serie, hasta muy buena por ratos, pero esas fallitas le impiden ser totalmente genial, la verdad.. y bueno, eso es todo por hoy, nos veremos en las próximas reseñas, cuidense mucho!
