The "advantage" of having been more than a month without having published anything, is that I had some time to play some games that I had in my "pending" list, but at the same time I didn't have enough time to write the reviews of those games, just some notes that would be useful in the future when I would sit down and start writing the reviews. Today's Retro Review is about a game of the Run N' Gun genre and over the years I have done several reviews of games of that genre such as: [Rapid Reload](https://peakd.com/hive-140217/@freddbrito/retro-review-rapid-reload), [Gunstar Heroes](https://peakd.com/hive-140217/@freddbrito/retro-review-gunstar-heroes), [Shock Troopers](https://peakd.com/hive-140217/@freddbrito/retro-review-shock-troopers) and other games, but the most emblematic and representative video game of this genre and which has managed to overcome the passing of the years thanks to its addictive gameplay and its beautiful pixelart art style and that video game is none other than: [Metal Slug](https://peakd.com/gaming/@freddbrito/retro-review-metal-slug). Curiously enough, the videogame I'm going to talk about today belongs to the same Metal Slug saga, but this time it was developed for one of Nintendo's old portable consoles, the Game Boy Advance.

In this new adaptation of the classic Run N' Gun game, we do not control Marco or Tarma, the classic protagonists of the saga, but two new recruits who belong to the army of "Peregrine Falcons": Walter Ryan and Tyra Elson. These two new protagonists are cadets in training when their base is attacked by General Morden's forces, which forces them to enter into real combat before graduating. The plot is simple, which is quite typical in this type of videogames, but despite this simplicity it has a more than effective and direct argument, which consists of escaping from enemy territory, destroying Morden's facilities and surviving the chaos and destruction. The graphics in Metal Slug Advance are a demonstration of the technical mastery that was the Game Boy Advance. The character sprites are perfectly animated, maintaining the fluidity and detail of the games that the iconic old NEO GEO is known for, which is quite impressive considering the hardware limitations of the Game Boy Advance. Each character, vehicle and enemy retains the comic and cartoonish style for which this saga is well known, with a direction and artistic elements that combine war chaos with visual humor. The scenarios are varied: jungles, factories, fortresses and deserts full of traps and enemies, all with a rich color palette and excellent level of detail. The sound is another strong point of this title, the Game Boy Advance has notable limitations in terms of audio quality, but Metal Slug Advance knew how to take full advantage of its capabilities and its own limitations. The soundtrack maintains the military themes that are combined with touches of jazz-rock classics of the saga, which makes it a fairly energetic and action-packed soundtrack. The sound effects such as explosions, gunshots, screams and the famous and already emblematic and characteristic of the Metal Slug saga: "Heavy Machine Gun!" are maintained and always cause me a lot of fun and joy to hear it, although logically all these sound effects are adapted to the chip of this portable console. However, despite this, they manage to preserve the game's auditory identity, which is a great technical merit. The music changes pitch depending on the mission, reinforcing the rhythm of the action. The gameplay is the strongest point of this title and this new version of Metal Slug Advance fulfills its purpose perfectly, as it manages to maintain the classic system of the franchise, which consists of: advancing laterally eliminating enemies, rescuing prisoners and collecting weapons. However, for this new version of Metal Slug, new elements of progression and exploration have been added, which is something out of the ordinary for the saga. A collectible card system is introduced, which are hidden in each level. These cards unlock upgrades, information and extra stuff, which manages to incentivize the player to explore every nook and cranny. In this way it gives a touch of replayability and strategy, I feel this is a phenomenal idea for a game aimed at a portable console. The difficulty, as usual in the series, is demanding but fair. The bosses are huge, the waves of enemies intense and the vehicle sections keep the adrenaline pumping. The controls are precise and perfectly adapted to the GBA, with a fast and fluid response. In addition, the game features a system of lives and checkpoints, instead of infinite credits like in the arcade. La “ventaja” de haber estado más de un mes sin haber publicado nada, es que tuve algo de tiempo de poder jugar algunos juegos que tenía en mi lista de “pendientes”, pero a la vez no tuve el suficiente tiempo como para redactar las reviews de esos juegos, tan solo algunas anotaciones las cuales me iban a servir en el futuro para cuando me dedicara a sentarme y empezar a redactar las reviews. En esta nueva adaptación del clásico juego del género Run N' Gun no controlamos a Marco o a Tarma, los clásicos protagonistas de la saga, sino a dos nuevos reclutas que pertenecen al ejército de “Peregrine Falcons”: Walter Ryan y Tyra Elson. Estos dos nuevos protagonistas son cadetes en entrenamiento cuando su base es atacada por las fuerzas del General Morden, lo que los obliga a entrar en combate real antes de graduarse. La trama es simple lo cual es algo bastante típico en este tipo de videojuegos, pero a pesar de esa simpleza cuenta con un argumento más que efectivo y directo, el cual consiste en escapar del territorio enemigo, destruir las instalaciones de Morden y sobrevivir al caos y destrucción. El apartado grafico de Metal Slug Advance es una demostración de la maestría técnica que fue la Game Boy Advance. Los sprites de los personajes están perfectamente animados, manteniendo la fluidez y el detalle de los juegos por el cual la antigua y emblemática NEO GEO es conocida, lo cual llega a ser bastante impresionante considerando las limitaciones de hardware de la Game Boy Advance. Cada personaje, vehículo y enemigo conserva el estilo cómico y caricaturesco del cual es muy conocido esta saga, con una dirección y elementos artísticos logra combinar el caos bélico con el humor visual. Los escenarios son variados: selvas, fábricas, fortalezas y desiertos llenos de trampas y enemigos, todos contando con una rica paleta de colores y excelente nivel de detalle. El sonido es otro punto fuerte de este título, la Game Boy Advance tiene limitaciones notables en cuanto a calidad de audio, pero Metal Slug Advance supo aprovechar al máximo sus capacidades y de sus propias limitaciones. La banda sonora mantiene los temas militares que son combinados con toques de jazz-rock clásicos de la saga, lo cual lo hace una banda sonora bastante enérgica y llena de acción. Los efectos de sonido como explosiones, disparos, gritos y el famoso y ya emblemático y característico de la saga Metal Slug: “Heavy Machine Gun!” se mantienen y siempre me causa bastante gracia y alegría poder escucharlo, aunque lógicamente todos estos efectos de sonido están adaptados al chip de esta consola portátil. Sin embargo a pesar de eso logran conservar la identidad auditiva del juego, lo cual es un gran mérito técnico. La música cambia de tono según la misión, reforzando el ritmo de la acción. La jugabilidad es el mayor punto de fuerte de este l título y esta nueva version de Metal Slug Advance cumple perfectamente con su propósito, ya que logra mantener el sistema clásico de la franquicia, el cual consiste en: avanzar lateralmente eliminando enemigos, rescatando prisioneros y recogiendo armas. Sin embargo, para esta nueva version de Metal Slug se han añadido nuevos elementos de progresión y exploración, lo cual es algo fuera de lo común para la saga. Se introduce un sistema de cartas coleccionables, las cuales se encuentran ocultas en cada nivel. Estas cartas desbloquean mejoras, información y cosas extras, lo cual logra incentivar al jugador a explorar cada rincón. De esta forma le da un toque de rejugabilidad y estrategia, siento esto una idea fenomenal para un juego dirigido a una consola portátil. La dificultad, como es costumbre en la serie, es exigente pero justa. Los jefes son enormes, las oleadas de enemigos intensas y las secciones de vehículos mantienen la adrenalina al máximo. Los controles son precisos y adaptados perfectamente al GBA, con una respuesta rápida y fluida. Además, el juego cuenta con un sistema de vidas y checkpoints, en lugar de créditos infinitos como en las recreativas.
