There are places that one does not visit for tourism, but for history. This was not just a trip for me. It was the first page of something I had been imagining for years, without knowing exactly what it would feel like to be there. Arriving in Guatemala, in Holguín, was entering a place that already existed in my mind for stories, for memories told, for roots that were not completely mine but that somehow were also mine.

Hay lugares que uno no visita por turismo, sino por historia. Este no fue solo un viaje para mí. Fue la primera página de algo que llevaba años imaginando, sin saber exactamente cómo se sentiría estar ahí. Llegar a Guatemala, en Holguín, fue entrar en un lugar que ya existía en mi mente por historias, por recuerdos contados, por raíces que no eran completamente mías pero que de alguna forma también lo eran.

A landscape that mixes past and present. Guatemala is located on the northeast coast of Cuba, very close to the Bay of Nipe, one of the largest in the country. It is approximately 25 km from the city of Mayarí. Before being called as we know it today, this town was known as Preston. It was a very important area due to its sugar plant, operated at the time by the American company United Fruit Company. All this gives it a strong historical weight, because it was a key point in the sugar industry of Cuba. Among the structures that remain from the past, you can also see remains of an old bridge. It was part of the system of the sugar center of the town, and there passed part of the movement that sustained the life of the place: the cane and the sugar towards the Bay of Nipe. Today it remains silent... like a trace of everything that was.

Un paisaje que mezcla pasado y presente.
Guatemala se encuentra en la costa norte oriental de Cuba, muy cerca de la Bahía de Nipe, una de las más grandes del país. Está aproximadamente a unos 25 km de la ciudad de Mayarí. Antes de llamarse como lo conocemos hoy, este poblado era conocido como Preston. Fue una zona muy importante por su central azucarero, operado en su momento por la empresa estadounidense United Fruit Company. Todo esto le da un peso histórico fuerte, porque fue un punto clave en la industria azucarera de Cuba. Entre las estructuras que quedan del pasado, también se pueden ver restos de un antiguo puente. Formaba parte del sistema del central azucarero del poblado, y por ahí pasaba parte del movimiento que sostenía la vida del lugar: la caña y el azúcar rumbo a la Bahía de Nipe. Hoy queda en silencio... como una huella de todo lo que fue.

Houses with history and a special charm
Casas con historia y un encanto especial

Something that really caught my attention were the houses. Some have a high structure and a style that is not seen in all places in Cuba. You can see the influence of the environment and its past linked to the central. They are not just constructions... they are living stories. Each one seems to keep their own way of having resisted time. A place that made me feel something unexpected. And among all that... something happened that I didn't expect. For me it was like arriving at Radiador Springs, that little town from the Cars movie, the most beautiful in the "carburetor county." I don't know how to explain it better: it was a simple place, quiet, but with a very special energy, as if every corner had its own life. I fell in love with the place.

Algo que me llamó muchísimo la atención fueron las casas. Algunas tienen una estructura elevada y un estilo que no se ve en todos los lugares de Cuba. Se nota la influencia del entorno y de su pasado ligado al central. No son solo construcciones… son historias vivas. Cada una parece guardar su propia forma de haber resistido el tiempo. Un lugar que me hizo sentir algo inesperado.
Y entre todo eso… pasó algo que no esperaba. Para mí fue como llegar a Radiador Springs, ese pueblito de la película de Cars, el más bonito del “condado carburador”. No sé cómo explicarlo mejor: era un lugar sencillo, tranquilo, pero con una energía muy especial, como si cada rincón tuviera su propia vida. Me enamoré del lugar.

Being there... was also being in me
Estar ahí… también fue estar en mí

Between walks, photos and silences, I understood something: This trip was not just to see new places. It was also to get closer to a part of my story, to what comes after my dad, my family, my roots. Throughout the tour there are also moments of mine, smiles, and that attempt to keep in a photo what sometimes does not fit in words. The sky, the water, the stones... everything mixes in colors that really leave you speechless. There are views that are beautiful... and there are others that, without exaggeration, melt. And this was one of those.

Entre caminatas, fotos y silencios, entendí algo: Este viaje no era solo para ver lugares nuevos. Era también para acercarme a una parte de mi historia, a lo que viene detrás de mi papá, de mi familia, de mis raíces. Entre todo el recorrido también hay momentos míos, sonrisas, y ese intento de guardar en una foto lo que a veces no cabe en palabras. El cielo, el agua, las piedras... todo se mezcla en colores que de verdad te dejan sin palabras. Hay vistas que son bonitas... y hay otras que, sin exagerar, derriten. Y esta fue una de esas.
