Entrar en la tumba de Tut Ankh Amun: ¿vale la pena o es puro marketing?

La Hostia, ¿cómo podría quejarme de un viaje como este? Ayer me dediqué -junto a mi nuevo amigo Erick-, a recorrer el lado este del Nilo: Templo de Luxor, avenida de las Esfinges, Templo de Karnak, Museo de la Momificación, navegar por el Nilo, comer como faraones… Este es mi segundo día en la Impresionante Luxor. Hoy toca recorrer el Valle de los Reyes, en el lado oeste. Si te soy franco, a mi juicio, la antigua Tebas (capital del Alto Egipto) posee lo mejor de todo el país -fuera del [**Gran Museo Egipcio**](https://gem.eg/). Y... Visitar el Valle de los Reyes ya es una experiencia impresionante. Pero cuando aparece la posibilidad de entrar en la tumba de Tutankamón, llega la gran pregunta por la que hoy me inclino a escribirte esta página:

¿Realmente entrar a la Tumba de Tutankamón vale la pena, o es puro marketing turístico?

. La sonrisa es para disimular lo que me costó. Yo también dudé. Porque el ticket cuesta extra y “bastante”, el sepulcro es pequeño y mucha gente dice que hay tumbas más espectaculares en Luxor. Afirmación a la que me sumo después de este día junto a [**Erick**](https://instagram.com/erickdgz07), [**Alexis**](https://instagram.com/alexis_antonm) y [**Finn**](https://instagram.com/finn_koethe) (mis nuevos amigos faraónicos de México, Perú y Alemania)… Sip. Os lo repito, dudé. Porque en verdad tiene parte y parte. Pero terminé entrando. Y la experiencia, os puedo asegurar, fue bastante distinta a lo que esperaba.

La tumba de Tutankamón en el Valle de los Reyes, Luxor

. La tumba de Tutankamón se encuentra dentro del famoso Valle de los Reyes, una de las necrópolis más importantes del antiguo Egipto. A diferencia de otras tumbas más grandes y decoradas, la de Tutankamón es relativamente pequeña. Y quizá por eso genera tanta discusión. Porque, con tanta fama, uno espera algo gigantesco, y más si el día anterior has visitado el mega impresionante Templo de Karnak -lo más descomunal que he visto en mi corta vida.

¿Por qué Tut Ankh Amun es tan famoso?

. La fama de Tutankamón no viene de conquistas ni de un gran reinado; pues frente a los demás faraones poderosos, murió siendo un jovenzuelo de 19 primaveras; quien reinó solo 10 años... Su estrellato viene de otra cosa: La tumba apareció casi intacta. Cuando Howard Carter la descubrió en 1922, el mundo quedó fascinado. Más de 5.000 objetos aparecieron dentro: joyas carros muebles máscaras funerarias Un auténtico tesoro congelado en el tiempo (que puedes ver en el Gran Museo Egipcio, en el Valle de Giza, El Cairo).

Entonces… ¿vale la pena entrar?

Mi respuesta corta: Sí.

Pero, debo repetir la misma frase que en **_El Monte Sinaí_** o las [**_Pirámides de Giza_**](https://mibitacoradeviajes.com/info-util/piramides-de-giza-mochilero/)… Sí, pero no por lo que imaginas. Si esperas: la tumba más impresionante de Egipto enormes pasillos decoraciones infinitas puede decepcionarte. Sin embargo, si acomodas con tu imaginación aquí toda la sala donde se exhiben los tesoros de Tut Ankh Amun, en El Cairo; encima de eso, consideras una pequeña conversación con la única momia intacta de todos estos faraones. Y entiendes lo que representa; la experiencia cambia. Porque allí dentro está el objeto central en esencia de para qué fue hecho este sitio (otras tumbas están mejores, pero ninguna tiene a su muertesito dentro). Sumadle la connotación: representa uno de los hallazgos arqueológicos más importantes de toda la historia. Vale. Si eres inteligente, eso se siente.

Ver la momia de Tutankamón

Aquí está uno de los momentos más impactantes. Puede que a mí me haya tomado por sorpresa y eso me haga agregarle cierta emoción; sin embargo, ¡de locos! Dentro de la tumba todavía permanece la momia del Tío. Y verla produce algo extraño. Cuando le vi (casi tropiezo con ella), allí, a la izquierda, como disimulada… No parece museo. No parece película. Es la realidad de este proceso de tiritas y ungüentos; que se presenta ante uno con la grandilocuencia de quien dice: hey, ya no lees un libro, me miras a mí. Después de tantos años viendo imágenes históricas y documentales, encontrarse frente a él genera un silencio raro. Uno de esos silencios que no se fuerzan.

Los tesoros de Tutankamón en el Gran Museo Egipcio

Quiero regalarte algo más que está relacionado con la Tumba de Tutankamón; aunque no lo verás dentro de ella cuando le visites. Curiosamente, lo más espectacular no está en la tumba. Está en el Grand Egyptian Museum, en El Cairo. Allí puedes ver: objetos originales carruajes armas joyas estatuas muebles funerarios piezas del ajuar de Tutankamón Y honestamente, eso sí es abrumador. Ver todo junto ayuda a entender la magnitud del descubrimiento. Ojalá cuando viajes a Egipto puedas visitar este museo y así tendrás más herramientas para comprender y disfrutar todo lo que veas, en las pirámides, en los diferentes templos y palacios… Acá, en el Valle de los Reyes, lo que me impresionó: No fue el tamaño de la tumba. Ni siquiera la momia. Fue la sensación. Pensar que durante más de 3.000 años ese lugar permaneció oculto bajo tierra. Silencioso. Esperando. Y que ahora estás allí, respirando el mismo aire caliente de una cámara funeraria antigua… Eso sí impacta.

Precio para entrar en la tumba de Tutankamón

. Ya te detallé bien claro en el Post: **Viajar a Egipto Barato**, todo lo relacionado al Presupuesto Mochilero. La entrada general al Valle de los Reyes es un pago inicial de 750 Libras Egipcias (EGP) y con ese Ticket tienes acceso a tres Tumbas de las “Libres”. Como es de esperarse en el invento mercantil, son las menos populares e importantes. Las más afamadas, como la Tumba de Tutankamóm, Ramsés V, Ramsés VI…, se pagan de manera independiente. Por cierto, estas tres son las Top Win. El Precio aproximado para entrar en la tumba de Tutankamón ronda los **10€–15€**, cerca de **700 EGP**, casi lo mismo que la entrada principal al recinto. No quieras ver la de Seti I, el Ticket vale 2000 EGP. (Los precios pueden cambiar según temporada.) Consejos mochileros para visitar la tumba Ve temprano, menos gente y menos calor. Lleva agua. No esperes una tumba gigantesca; aunque tampoco es de las menores. Combínala con otras tumbas del Valle. Varias de ellas son visualmente más impresionantes. Pero ninguna tiene el peso simbólico de esta.

Por fin, ¿Vale la pena o es marketing?

Seré el mayor iluso, pero no me la esperaba aquí.

. Repito la pregunta una vez más. ¿La respuesta honesta? Puede que un poco de ambas. Sí, el nombre vende muchísimo. Y supongo que le hayan sacado el kilo; lo mismo sucede con el Caviar ruso, los Puros cubanos... Pero también hay algo especial en estar allí. No por lujo. No por espectáculo. Sino por historia. Su peculiar historia. Uhm… ¿Encontrarán la tumba de Cleopatra?

Experiencia personal

Entré pensando que quizá estaba pagando solo por el nombre. Y al salir entendí que no. La tumba no me impresionó por grandeza. Me impresionó por cercanía. Porque por un instante, Tut Ankh Amun dejó de ser un personaje histórico, y se volvió humano.

Cómo integrar esta visita en tu ruta por Luxor

La tumba forma parte perfecta de una visita completa a: Valle de los Reyes Templo de Hatshepsut Colosos de Memnón Todo puede hacerse en un mismo día. Y os quedará tiempo para cenar la deliciosa comida egipcia, navegar por el Nilo al atardecer en sus famosas barcas, y recorrer las abrumadoras calles de la Tebas Capital.

La tumba de Tutankamón no es la más espectacular de Egipto. Pero quizá eso no importa tanto. Porque algunos lugares no se vuelven inolvidables por lo que muestran… sino por todo lo que representan. Entering Tutankhamun's tomb: Is it worth it or just marketing hype?

Holy crap, how could I complain about a trip like this? Yesterday, along with my new friend Erick, I explored the east bank of the Nile: Luxor Temple, the Avenue of Sphinxes, Karnak Temple, the Mummification Museum, a Nile cruise, and eating like pharaohs… This is my second day in breathtaking Luxor. Today, we're exploring the Valley of the Kings on the west bank. To be honest, in my opinion, ancient Thebes (capital of Upper Egypt) has the best of the entire country—aside from the Grand Egyptian Museum. And… Visiting the Valley of the Kings is already an amazing experience. But when the possibility of entering Tutankhamun's tomb arises, the big question that compels me to write this page today emerges:

Is entering Tutankhamun's tomb really worth it, or is it just tourist marketing?

A sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with after this day with Erick, Alexis, and Finn (my new pharaonic friends from Mexico, Peru, and Germany)... Yep. I repeat, I had my doubts. Because it's true that it has its merits. But I ended up going in. And the experience, I can assure you, was quite different from what I expected.

Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings, Luxor

. Tutankhamun's tomb is located within the famous Valley of the Kings, one of the most important necropolises of ancient Egypt. Unlike other larger and more ornate tombs, Tutankhamun's is relatively small. And perhaps that's why it generates so much discussion. Because, with such fame, one expects something gigantic, especially if the day before you've visited the mega-impressive Temple of Karnak—the most colossal thing I've ever seen in my short life.

Why is Tutankhamun so famous?

. Tutankhamun's fame doesn't stem from conquests or a great reign; compared to other powerful pharaohs, he died a young man of 19. His stardom comes from something else: The tomb was found almost intact. When Howard Carter discovered it in 1922, the world was captivated. Add to that the significance: it represents one of the most important archaeological discoveries in all of history. Okay. If you're intelligent, you can feel it.

Seeing Tutankhamun's mummy

. Here's one of the most impactful moments. It may have taken me by surprise, which adds a certain emotion; however, it's crazy! The mummy of the uncle still remains inside the tomb. And seeing it produces something strange. When I saw it (I almost tripped over it), there, on the left, as if hidden… It doesn't look like a museum. It doesn't look like a movie. It's the reality of this process of band-aids and ointments; presented to you with the grandiloquence of someone saying: hey, you're not reading a book anymore, you're looking at me. After so many years of seeing historical images and documentaries, standing before it evokes a strange silence. One of those silences that doesn't feel forced.

Tutankhamun's Treasures at the Grand Egyptian Museum

. I want to share something else with you that's related to Tutankhamun's tomb, although you won't see it inside when you visit. Interestingly, the most spectacular artifacts aren't in the tomb. They're at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo. There you can see: original artifacts chariots weapons jewelry statues funerary furniture pieces from Tutankhamun's funerary offerings And honestly, that is truly overwhelming. Seeing it all together helps you grasp the magnitude of the discovery. I hope that when you travel to Egypt you can visit this museum so you'll have more tools to understand and enjoy everything you see—the pyramids, the different temples, and the palaces… What truly impressed me: It wasn't the size of the tomb. Not even the mummy. It was the feeling. To think that for more than 3,000 years that place remained hidden underground. Silent. Waiting. And now you're there, breathing the same warm air as an ancient burial chamber… That's truly impactful.

Price to enter Tutankhamun's tomb

. I already explained everything clearly in the post: Traveling to Egypt on a Budget, everything related to the Backpacker Budget. The general admission to the Valley of the Kings is an initial payment of 750 Egiptian Pounds (EGP), and with that ticket, you have access to three of the "Free" tombs. As is to be expected with this commercial system, these are the least popular and important. The most famous tombs, such as those of Tutankhamun, Ramses V, Ramses VI, etc., require separate admission. By the way, these three are the top choices. The approximate price to enter Tutankhamun's tomb is around **€10–€15**, about **700 EGP**, almost the same as the main entrance fee to the site. Ja, The Tomb Seti I cost 2000 EGP. (Prices may change depending on the season.)

Backpacker tips for visiting the tomb

Go early; there are fewer people and it's less hot. Bring water. Don't expect a gigantic tomb; although it's not one of the smallest either. Compare it to other tombs in the Valley. Several of them are visually more impressive. But none have the symbolic weight of this one.

So, is it worth it or is it just marketing?

I went in thinking that maybe I was just paying for the name. And when I left, I understood that wasn't the case. The tomb didn't impress me with its grandeur. It impressed me with its proximity. Because for a moment, Tutankhamun ceased to be a historical figure and became human.
