Scientists - 04 - Antoine Lavoisier (1743-1794)

Antoine Lavoisier the French chemist who founded modern chemistry was born on the 26th August 1743 in a small town, France.

After having his early education from a school in his native town, he entered a university.

After passing out as a young scientist he disproved phlogiston theory which said that a substance named phlogiston was lost during combustion by demonstrating the function of oxygen in combustion, before a large gathering.

“There is no such substance in inflammable matter such as straw, paper, wood etc” asserted Lavoisier, and further said that oxygen plays a major role in the process of burning them.

In addition, he explained that air is formed with a large part of oxygen and heat is released when any matter is burned.

He made a great contribution to science with a host of experiments he conducted on soil, water, air, metals, acids, bases and various other chemicals.

He named oxygen and hydrogen and showed how they combined to form water.

In collaboration with Claude Bertthollet, a famous scientist of the day, he published ‘Methods of Chemical Nomenclature’ in 1787. This great work laid down the modern method of naming substances.

Apart from being an eminent scientist who made history, he functioned as a great philanthrope. He spent a lot of money for the welfare of the poor, needy and the elderly people.

Antoine Lavoisier the humanitarian man of science, passed away in 1794, in his native town in France.
