It’s finally cooled off a bit so we needed to get out and stretch our legs a bit. We decided to do a quick afternoon walk through some area botanical gardens. As I most often do in new areas I popped open our geocaching app to see if there were any interesting hides.
There were a few caches on the map, but we ended up only want to walk a couple miles so we went to only one. It happened that it was my favorite named find in a while. The hid was called ‘slow and streaky’.
It did not take too long to figure out the reference and we found the cache hiding under this turtle which was along a busy path. It’s always amazing how many caches are in plan sight and are hidden to the everyday person.
After our walk I wanted to cool down with a fresh can of North Peak Brewing’s Tropical Diabolical IPA which is a variant of the Diabolical IPA with a fruity addition.
The appearance is clear with very defined streams of carbonation. It looks like a lager than an IPA. Most of the IPAs I have been consuming lately are hazy or unfiltered. There’s a solid fully medium bodies head that retained some of its shape for longer than I expected.
The aroma is dank with loads of pine, earthy floral and citrus. It’s a pungent beer leaning on the IPA backbone. The additional of the tropical fruit added a sweetness, but I could not pick a single fruit out by name. I’m not sure that was intentional to keep everything so balanced , but it works for a good aroma.
I could pick out more of the fruits from the taste. They brewed it with generous amounts of passion fruit, pineapple, guava, tangerine and sweet orange peel. I could pick out the pineapple and orange. I was getting a generous amount of sweetness that’s probably from the other fruits. I also got that dank hop forward IPA I am use too. It’s a bitter one with seven hop varietals which give it that bite.
The mouthfeel is slick with a bit of chew that gives it’s a filling effect. I’m a fan of the heavier body because I only had one pint. If I had two I’d probably be sick of it.
Overall, it was a great beer to finish the day. It’s was packed with flavor and the bit of fruit gave it a refreshing feeling.
