Oberon is a true Michigan classic. With notes of wheat, orange and bread sweetness that’s perfect for a bonfire or a hot day. It was one of my first craft beers so the original is a favorite in my household. I am excited when they produce variants. In the past Ive tried a version with habanero which was meh at best. However, this mango version is by far one of the best variants I have tried.
It pours an opaque, thick mango flesh/orange color. It's slightly hazy, but it's not crazy. There is thin fizzy soda like white head that dissipates quickly leaving no residual head. The bubbles start a bit packed, but open to larger fluffy bubbles before fading.
The aroma has notes of wheat, a bit of a yeasty with lighter notes of sweet mango and citrus. It's very subtle which is not what i expected. I think it is more subtle that the original which leans heavier on the wheat and grain notes.
The taste has notes of wheat, mango, citrus, and grapefruit. It's pretty well balanced, but the mango is center stage in the profile.
As it should be considering it the variant. The mango gives it a nice sweet and somewhat bitter profile. It's a good fruit to pair with the citrus and orange flavors typically in this beer.
I like the mouthfeel of this beer. It's medium bodied with a very refreshing crispness to it.For being a medium bodied beer it has some bright carbonation that adds to the refreshing crispness.
Overall, this is a good variant of the original. I would like to see it added year round as i could seeing myself switching to this in the summer and drinking the original in the fall.
