gm frens!
This is me.
A slightly younger version of me.
A little munchkin discovering the world through legos and Dr. Seuss books.
My mom sent me these today. She keeps the originals in photo album somewhere.
My dad sent me this:
It's a tweet from 1981
they called it... telegram.
For all you yungins out there, this was what they used before the internet. They used a device called the telegraph that sent electrical signal over wires using morse code. which are just a series of beeps. The person on the receiving end would decode the message and type it out, print it and give it to someone for hand delivery. Quite the logistics, right?
The name comes from the greek words tele, which means at a distance, and graphien, meaning to write.
Nostalgia anyone?
hahaha
Let's get back to celebrating; today is about celebration!!!
Today, I'm a little bit older 👌 ( I'd like to thing a little less dumb too) and very thankful to be alive for a little while.
The civilized way to celebrate this is... birthday mescals! of course!
Headed down to El Tope. A bar that specializes in all types of mescals brought in from Oaxaca, Mexico.
The name translates to speed bump, which is appropriate because you'll want to slow down when walking past this joint. You might see something you like and make a quick stop :).
Or maybe it slows down the senses, lol. either way, it's a good name.
The owners, good friends of ours, travel by car from Guatemala City every few months and look for the rarest and wildest mescals they can find.
This place is not about maximizing sales and making huge profits, it's about sharing the mescal culture with friends and supporting small farmers and producers.
The devil says.. welcome!
Here you go birthday boy!

I was greeted with a glass of 7 diablos mescal with chili powder, and small hill of spicy chapulines and a pint of porter #beer
What are chapulines? I'm glad you asked.
Fried grasshoppers! yum!
Here's a better shot so you can see them up close. Sure, some of you might not find the thought of eating bugs appealing, but mexicans have been eating these little critters in tortilla for centuries, and I can see why. They are spicy, tasty and nutritious, so why not?
If you're willing to try something new, you might just like chapulines. I love them.
These folks sure know how to make a man happy. can you tell?
They also has great music playing which is a huge bonus. Peter, head chef at Sal, Sal de Mar and bass player in The Remolacha Beets band is also quite the music connoisseur. He likes to collect 90's rock memorabilia and vinyl records from yesteryear.
This is a poster of Pear Jam's concert in Berlin in 2012:
you can check the setlist and some official photos on the Pear Jam website
