I have always preferred my coffee black, no sugar. Sometimes, though, I come up against a brew that is just plain unpalatable. As a rule, I try to avoid refined sugars and don’t particularly care for sweet coffee anyway, so trying to make it drinkable by adding sugar is not an option for me. Years ago, somebody (I wish I remember who) told me how the navy brewed their coffee with salt to cut down on the bitterness. And it works! Just add a pinch to the grounds before you brew it or (think breakfast at a greasy spoon here) just give that old salt shaker a quick shake into your cup and taste the magic happen. Just don’t overdo it and you won’t even taste the salt.
