This is a meal that my older brother and I would always cook together. We got this recipe from our grandmother who is 100% German. This is one of my family's favorite meal, and I hope yours enjoys it too.
German Sauerkraut Dinner Recipe
One chopped onion (we did not have in onion so we used about 3/4 teaspoon of onion powder)
-one medium size shredded potato
-1 2lb bag of sauerkraut
-about a 1-1/2 pounds of a linked meat(we're using beef sausage links)
-1 cup of water
- 1/2 tablespoon of caraway seeds
~two skillets (I'm using cast iron)
~a spatula
Also generally this meal is also served with mashed potatoes, but we have not made them from this go around
Begin by chopping your onion (as said earlier I forgot to get onions so instead I used onion powder) and shredding your potato. Once that is completed, put about a teaspoon of butter in one pan and cook the onions until golden-brown.
If you don't have onions, add the onion power when you put the first half of the sauerkraut in the pan. Then add 1/2 a cup of water and half of the sauerkraut to the pan. Cook for 15-20 minutes, on medium heat for 7 minutes then cooking it on low for the rest of the time, stirring occasionally. Be sure to cover the sauerkraut when you are not stirring it.
Then add caraway, salt, and pepper. On top of the seasonings put the rest of the water and sauerkraut. Again cook for about 15-20 minutes.
While your are have add the rest of the ingredients to the sauerkraut. Begin cooking the meat in your second skillet, first cut as desired, I have found that the best way is to cut the links into disks.
Next, cook until browned or how you prefer.
After sauerkraut and the beef sausages are completely cooked place the sausages on top of the sauerkraut and serve. Again this meal is also usually served with mashed potatoes, but don't feel obligated to do so.
