Firefox gets Windows BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) to download software updates in the background, even when Firefox is closed.
This new update method is currently in the testing phase.
Windows users can already test this new update method in the currently Firefox Nightly build, but probably the developers will also implement this new update method in the Linux version of Firefox.
***"In the currently [Firefox Nightly build](https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/), Mozilla has added two new flags that can be used to test downloading software updates via BITS. Users can enable this test by setting the app.update.BITSenabled and app.update.BITS.inTrialgroup preferences to true in about:config."*** - [Firefox to Use Windows BITS Service for Background Updates](https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/software/firefox-to-use-windows-bits-service-for-background-updates).
