Brekkie in Melbourne
My daughter , who came back last Saturday from Canberra for the weekend, took my wife and me to dine at a neighborhood cafe this morning. This cosy, small cafe on Canterbury Road, Blackburn, serves very decent coffee and typically Australian style breakfast.
We ordered three different dishes. My wife ordered Veggie Breakfast--scrambled eggs, with button mushrooms, roasted tomato, hash brown, house-baked beans and baby spinach.
Whereas my daughter chose "Three Amigos"--smashed avocado on toasted sourdough with poached eggs, haloumi, sweet corn salsa and chipotle dressing.
I selected the shop's signature dish: Charlotte's brekkie--bacon, scrambled eggs, avocado, topped with corn salsa and hollandaise on thick rye bread.
This brunch is certainly a treat to me. Tasty as it is, I as a sojourner in a foreign place start to miss what I normally have for my breakfast in rural Taiwan, such as mantou (steamed bun), baozi (stuffed steam bun), scallion crepe, pan-fried buns, congee (rice porridge), Taiwanese style noodle soup, lurou fan (rice with braised minced pork or soy-stewed ground pork with rice), shaobing (baked flatbread), youtiao (deep-fried dough stick).
