A pancake, also known as hotcake or griddlecake or flapjack, is a flat cake that is usually served thin and round in shape. Pancakes are made from starch-based batter that may contain eggs, milk and butter and are cooked usually on frying pans. Archaeological evidence suggests that pancakes were probably the earliest and most widespread cereal food eaten in prehistoric societies when researchers found pancakes in the stomach of Otzi, The Iceman, dating back to 5,300 years. The name 'pancake' started during the 15th century but became standard in 19th century America.
Pancakes may be served with a wide variety of toppings including, jam, fresh fruits, syrup, chocolate chips, etc.
