Whether unofficial or official 1st of May is a holiday in Greece. And if you combine it with the fact that we have the first real hot summer days of the season, you start to realize why people flood the countryside and those who can the beaches.
I don’t have a car or a beach nearby, but this doesn’t mean it won’t take advantage of the day off for something fun. It’s been a while since I went out to eat so here I am sitting in a family restaurant in Athens called «Δυο Δεκαρες η Οκα». Free translation is two pennies the pound.
Not very far from where I live , it has a thirty year tradition of excellent Greek cuisine and reasonable prices. Located in a touristy area it is decorated in a rather old fashioned nearly folklore way, but what can you say, people like that kind of stuff.
Upon entering you see a vitrine of cooked dishes to choose your main course.
I just had finished a grueling workout at the gym, so I wanted protein. Yeah, I know an excuse to load on meat. And I loaded … I took lamp with French fries and roasted feta. Feta is a traditional Greek white cheese. Got the protein covered and with toasted bread, I got carbs covered. Well… Guess I am an adorable and lovely costumer, because they offered me a glass of fine white wine.
The food was awesome. The bread was toasted with a bit of olive oil on top and plenty of excuses to dip it into the “juicy” dishes. Feta was perfectly roasted and was melting inside the mouth . On top there were thin slices of tomatoes and spicy peppers. The hotness of the cheese bites made you appreciate the refreshing chilled wine.
The fries were homemade, from real potatoes, golden and crunchy, perfect match with the tender meat. Yes, the lamb … It was absolutely awesome. So well cooked that you could separate the meat from the bone with your fork and there was no need to use knife to cut. And you could still taste the flavor of the meat with every bite, even though it was soft like butter.
I slowly enjoyed the meal and as you see there was not much left. I paid 15 euros which is great for this quality and quantity of food.
Hope you had an enjoyable 1st of May.
And until the next food adventure…
