How often have you heard that some exotic animal 'tastes like chicken'? If so, then why bother eating it? I do wonder at why some people are so dedicated at eating meat. Is it partly about domination over the animal kingdom? I appreciate that taste plays a part, but there are so many other flavours out there.
I gave up eating meat about 25 years ago for various reasons that included the animal cruelty that is involved in farming. Since then there have been many food scares around meat as well as the ongoing use of antibiotics and genetic modification (in some countries). I don't really miss meat and I think I have a pretty good diet. I'll say that I do still eat some fish, eggs and dairy as a personal choice. This isn't a religion. I know some veggies are not interested in meat substitutes, but they must play a big part in weaning people away from meat. There wasn't much choice when I gave it up, but now there are lots and many are using Quorn. This is based on a fungus. This article goes on about how it is a highly processed food, but then so are a lot of things we eat for taste and convenience. Most Quorn is not vegan as it contains egg products.
We eat a fair bit of Quorn in our house. Most of it is sold as a meat substitute and tends to name the meat (chicken, beef, bacon). I think you could give some of it to most people and they wouldn't notice if it was cooked in a meal such as a curry. I have this 'chicken' in my sandwiches.
We use their mince and chunks in some of our meals. They also do various burgers and other convenience food. We also have other veggie products that don't use Quorn. Some of our meals are made from raw ingredients too. It is largely a matter of convenience. We both work and don't want to spend too much time cooking. We're just not that into it.
The scale of animal farming these days is not very sustainable. People eat far more meat than previous generations. Animals require masses of resources including land, water and chemicals. We may have to make more use of grown products that may include meat grown from cells, insects and other sources of protein to feed a growing population.
I don't expect everyone to change, but I think we should all think about the effects we have on the world. I'm by no means perfect.
Eat, drink and be merry.
