Yep, in previous years we've made our own jams - it's still a serious amount of sugar but I guess when it comes to fruit in winter it's either that or the quandary of growing out of season (costly/environmental impact) or importing (again, environmental issue).
I suppose it also follows a natural cycle to an extent in that during the winter you burn more calories heating yourself, so you take in more through the sugar. All things in moderation :)
