We tried to pack so much into our first full day of vacation that it is impressive we had the energy to make it through the rest of the days. Check out the posts I will link at the bottom of this one to get up to speed if you are just joining us.
It was about 1:00 PM when we finished our mine tour at the Quincy Mine Hoist Association. We ran through a Taco Bell and got some food for the road before we made our way further up the Keweenaw Peninsula towards Copper Harbor, MI.
From Hancock, MI it is probably a good 60 minute drive up highway 41 to Copper Harbor. It is an absolutely beautiful drive taking you through Calumet (more on that in another post), and several other small towns.
In fact, we were just passing through the small town of Mohawk, MI when I spotted the building pictured below.
I immediately pulled over so could take some pictures of it. Why? You might ask. Well I felt obligated to give
a little satisfaction. This is exactly the type of place that he would be poking about on one of his #urbex posts.
Unfortunately, surrounded by nothing but empty space in the middle of town right off a busy highway we refrained from doing any further exploring. Plus pretty much everyone up in these parts owns a gun and in the US they aren't quite as forgiving about trespassers as they are in the UK.
The satellite dish on the side tells me that it has been used for something pretty recently. Anyway, there you go , proof I was thinking about you while on my vacation!
The last ten miles of highway 41 before you get to Copper Harbor is a beautiful drive. I can only imagine how awesome it would be driving it with a sports car versus my 3/4 ton pickup truck which drives like a tank.
Filled with twists and turns it is a performance drivers dream. We were lucky enough to not be stuck behind any "Sunday drivers" and were able to experience the full effect. It was sort of like a roller coaster ride in spots. The canopy of tress has got to be breathtaking in the fall when the colors start to change.
You pass by the shores of Lake Medora before you finally find yourself pulling into the town of Copper Harbor.
As I mentioned in an earlier post, it has been close to thirty years since I have been to the state. I would venture to say not much has changed, but I don't know how accurate that would be. I expected Copper Harbor to be a quiet little town at the tip of the peninsula. That was far from the case.
Although still a small town, it was jam packed with people. Specifically a particular kind of people... Mountain Bikers. Apparently, Copper Harbor has become somewhat of a Mecca for mountain bike enthusiasts. I have a co-worker who travels to this part of the state several times a year and though I knew he was an avid mountain biker, I think I totally misjudged his commitment to the sport.
Stop back tomorrow to hear more about the abundant mountain bikers and the rest of our very short time at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula.
