It's been a while since I made any Kefir Water, so I ordered some new grains to get started from Amazon. I've been doing my best to get my gut biome back into a healthier state, making Kefir Water, Yogurt, Fermented Vegetables, and baking recipes with my Sourdough Starter has certainly made a difference.
Water Kefir
1 quart filtered or distilled water
1/4 cup raw cane sugar
2 tablespoons of kefir grains
1/4 teaspoon of molasses (optional)
Since Kefir water contains over 30 different strains of beneficial probiotic bacteria to improve gut health along with healthy minerals including Vitamin B, Vitamin C, calcium, and magnesium, it certainly seems like a healthy way to assist me on this journey.
- I take 1 cup of water and boil it on the stove and add the sugar cane stirring it until it dissolves. I let it cool completely before adding it to the rest of the water and the grains. Heat would certainly harm the bacteria, so that is very important to remember. Cover the jar with a cloth and rubber band to keep any dust or fruit flies away.
- After feeding the grains for 3 days in the sugar water, I drain the water into another jar and add fruit to that jar to start the second ferment.
After two-three more days the water will have a fruity-fizzy zip, somewhat like soda pop. You can see from the photo that it has bubbles letting me know it is fermenting nicely.
Once the Kefir Water is fizzy to your liking it is time to put it into the refrigerator to slow down the fermenting process.
Some people have stated that they let the water ferment too long on the counter and have had bottles explode from the gases. I keep a close eye on the bottles to make sure they are not too fizzy.
I realize that this is just one way to heal my leaky gut and help build up my immune system, but I do use a variety of methods to help me heal after using so many prescription drugs over the years. I used to take three to six Ibuprofin tablets a day for pain which caused a lot of stomach issues for me.
I have to say that changing my diet to a Keto-style regime and a lowering my carbohydrates to a minimum have helped greatly too. My goal is to be able to get off most of the prescriptions that I can and also drop some of the weight I've incurred.
If you are dealing with some of these health issues I encourage you to do some research and see what interests, you the most to start repairing your gut as well. Below is a previous post on making your own #probiotic #yogurt.
