Rather easy to miss in an inconspicuous shed right next to the holy family hospital is a veritable institution to those who know ‘Bombay’ well or those who do their homework and this was one assignment I completed well on time.
J Hearsch is a century old bakery started by an Englishman, which then changed hands to an east Indian family, and has remained that way ever since. The monument stocks spring rolls, croissants, cutlets, burgers and a horde of pastries, always crowded until the late evenings, the queue here tends to be serpentine. All for a scrumptious range of evergreen economical snacks.
Here’s what I had:
Chicken Pattice (Puff) - Rs 25 (0.34 $)
The mutton and the chicken puff follow a simple rule, the dough cannot overpower the filling. While the baked filo layers are standard in being crisp, the piquant mutton mince (with peas) & spiced chicken are commendable in quantity. My personal favourites and worth the trip any day.
Mutton Puff - Rs 35 (0.47 $)
Veg Puff - Rs 20 (0.27 $)
Toss your cornerside bakers long-shelved veg puffs into the bin, what with the dedicated detail in veggie & onion-curried spice content, these are 10x as potent as those i’m sadly used to eating these days. I bet it would be the same for you.
Chicken Chilly Croissant - Rs 70 (0.94 $)
Just as Anton egos memory sparked upon sampling the ratatouille (The Similarities End There, In All Modesty LOL), these croissant's gave me a vivid flashback of the bakes section at lulu hypermarket in Bahrain, which may I add, is comparably affordable.
Cheese Croissant - Rs 35 (0.47 $)
This is a worthwhile place to visit if your ever in Mumbai, India. I got a few more snacks parcelled from this place to munch on during my Mumbai Food Trip and aren't the prices dirt cheap ?
