Only during Halloween will the Mexican De Meurta costume and makeup make the food that much more appetizing. The entire restaurant was stunned at Paula's dramatic entrance. I was surprised the lights didn't abruptly blow out and the flowers didn't catch fire.
👻🎃😈
We didn't plan on anything huge this Halloween. A small get-together would suffice. We were all encouraged to dress spooky but I look like a deformed cow as a default so I went like myself.
Daria dressed up like my worst nightmare - a deadly nurse. She had this beautiful blood dripping choker which I thought was super creative. She also put a lot of stickers on her body which I had mistaken for tattoos and thought to myself, hmmm never seen those before.
The entire party was a long time coming. We had to book a table at the venue 2 weeks prior to the evening. It's a Sunday evening and top of that Halloween. Very slim chances of getting a big table unless you make a reservation.
There were plenty of people who did come with a touch of Halloween vibes. Some wore dark make-up, some wore witch hats, some with robes. But no one really went all in like Paula and Daria.
In proper Halloween fashion, I thought it would only make sense if I ordered something pumpkin-y. I was in luck. I also thought to myself I should make my entire meal Halloweenish. Even if not pumpkin, then something along the lines of scary.
For the main dish, I went with the grilled chicken and pumpkin. Trust me I was in no mood for grilled chicken but the pumpkin had me cornered. To add more effect, the plate would be a nightmare for anyone with trypophobia.
A beautiful and so aromatic plate of juicy grilled chicken with a hint of bbq flavor. Placed on a bed of that sweet pumpkin puree and topped off with herbs.
The puree by itself was a delicious treat. I could use that as a condiment for days! The chicken was extremely juicy to the point I had to recheck if it was really "grilled". I loved how subtle the bbq flavoring was. It allowed your palette to taste the chicken first and then the added flavors second.
I was told that the chicken was grilled over Oak and Hickory. Most places use just one type of wood to avoid mixing of flavors and to get a more consistent and controlled heat. The chef here prefers to use both. Most of it was lost in translation but I believe he uses one at a time. After grilling over one wood, the next one is used to finish off or maybe char.
Anywhos, the chef is doing something right. There is no reason to not like whatever he is doing with two kinds of wood as long the finished product is delicious. The perfect bite would probably be a slice of dark meat and scoop a little bit of pumpkin puree. Follow up with a cleanser with the herbs or throw it on the wall if you don't like healthy green herbs I guess.
If you have read my posts on beverages then you already know my all-time favorite drink is P.F. Chang's Secret Drink. It is a special ginger ale with a few other ingredients that aren't shown on the menu. I haven't yet found anything close to it but I have found plenty of ginger lemonades and they do come close but no bulls-eye.
I decided to take the pineapple and ginger lemonade. Sounds very edgy and fitting to the occasion. I'd gladly put this drink in my top 10. It had the right amount of pineapple twang and the right amount of gingery kick. A small sprinkle of bright red berries on top for effect. Call it the Halloween special.
After dining we went around spooking people with Paula and Daria. It was fun! The food, the time spent together, and the entire vibe was enjoyable. Maybe next year I'll go the city concert but this year Nasha Dacha will do just enough!
Happy Halloween! 👻
